Annapolis Light House Shelter

The Light House, a Homeless Prevention Support Center, is seeking an Assistant Volunteer Coordinator to help recruit, train, supervise, and recognize volunteers; develop partnerships with local organizations and businesses; and train key staff members and/or volunteer leaders in the best practices of volunteer management. The candidate must be a team-player who is self-starting, mature, energetic and creative, and who is comfortable with public speaking. Competency in Microsoft Office Suite is required and reliable transportation is a must. This is a 10-month, full-time commitment funded through a grant from Volunteer Maryland/AmeriCorps. The service year offers extensive training, a $13,000 living allowance, and a $5,550 post-service education award. This program is a partnership between The Light House and Volunteer Maryland/AmeriCorps. The service year begins Sept. 26, 2012 and ends Aug. 13, 2013. Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services

Would you like to make a difference in one year of the life of a child?  The Department of Social Services’ Mentoring Program is looking for male volunteers to mentor at-risk male youth living in the West and North part of Anne Arundel County.  Mentors are matched with at-risk youth ages 8-20 years old in the Child Welfare Program.  Mentors are positive role models who provide guidance and support in a one-on-one relationship.   All mentors must be willing to commit to one year and are background screened and trained.  Please contact Tanya Steele, Volunteer Coordinator at [email protected] or 410-269-4461.

 

Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers, in small groups, and ESL tutoring. •     Sat., Sept. 29 and Sat., Oct. 13, 2012, Tutor Training: The next tutor training consisting of two sessions is scheduled for at Woods Memorial in Severna Park. The new tutor training format is twelve hours in length and covers both Basic Literacy and ELL.  Those interested in attending this training should email[email protected], or call 410-798-0408.

 

The Borgen Project

The Borgen Project fights for the underdog by advocating for the poor throughout the world. Although The Borgen Project is located in Seattle, volunteer Regional Directors are recruited nationwide and participate in a national campaign that is working to make poverty a focus of U.S. foreign policy. The Regional Directors meet with congressional leaders and lobby for legislation that improves living conditions for those living on less than $1 per day and mobilize people in the community to contact congressmen. Regional Directors operate independently from home and sign a 6-month contract. The position is volunteer based and is roughly 4-6 hours per week.  H.O.P.E., Inc. (He Opens the Path to Everyone)

H.O.P.E., Inc. is an all-volunteer non-profit Christian ministry serving families in need in the north AA County, Baltimore City areas and also the Appalachian region by collecting and distributing donated school supplies, household goods, furniture, and clothing. There is an immediate need for volunteers, including those needing to serve court-ordered community service, to assist with pickup and delivery of donated furniture and other items, especially from 8 am–Noon, on Tues.–Thurs., and Sat. National Aquarium Chesapeake Bay Initiative Habitat Restoration Project
Sat., Oct. 6, 2012, Fort McHenry Field Day (National Public Lands Day): The ten-acre tidal wetland bordering Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine now serves as a refuge for many species of wildlife including sea ducks, heron, muskrats, and red-winged blackbirds Join the Conservation Department at the National Aquarium in Baltimore at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to help clean up the bay.  The National Aquarium in Baltimore is looking for community volunteers, ages 14 and older, to participate, rain or shine. Activities include

Spa Creek Conservancy

Spa Creek Conservancy in cooperation with the City of Annapolis is offering a workshop from Noon–2:00 pm, Thurs., Oct.25, 2012 to cover ways of controlling stormwater runoff to help the creek as well as the Chesapeake Bay. The workshop targets businesses wanting to help and is being held at the EPA Chesapeake Bay Program located in the Annapolis City Marina in Eastport. Speakers include Annapolis Mayor Josh Cohen and Nick DiPasquale, Director of the Chesapeake Bay Program. The workshop is free and includes lunch. For information see website at: www.spacreek.org.

 

The Little Things for Cancer

The Little Things for Cancer is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for cancer patients and their caregivers. We serve patients and their caregivers who live and/or are being treated inMaryland. We offer support to each family based upon their particular needs at that time. Our goal is to improve the quality of life by reducing stress and anxiety for the person affected by cancer and those closest to them.

We are looking for compassionate individuals to help our organization by doing various activities including, but not limited to, clerical work, running errands (grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, picking up and dropping off items to patients/caregivers), helping with fundraising events, etc. For more information and to volunteer, contact wletow@thelittlethings4cancer.org or 443-228-8584. Seeds 4 Success

Seeds 4 Success (S4S), the organization that began Eastport Girls Club, is launching a new program called I Am a Reader (IAR) in September 2012. The program targets 1st through 3rd grade boys who attend Eastport Elementary School. S4S is seeking adult male volunteers who agree to commit approximately 2.5 hours a week for an academic school year (20 sessions overall) to serve as a tutor and literacy coach for a boy living in Annapolis public or subsidized housing. One and a half hours each week will involve providing individual tutoring each Monday from 3-4 p.m. at the Annapolis Library on West Street and then transporting the child home. The remaining hour is more flexible and will involve coordinating with the S4S Education Director and attending occasional field trips with the boys. Tutor candidates need to have well developed overall literacy skills (specific skills will be taught during training). It is also essential that tutors be dependable, able to communicate high expectations, and have a firm yet positive style of providing feedback to youth about their behavior and reading progress.
