Partners In Care, the community nonprofit organization which provides supportive services to help older adults remain independent in their own homes, has received local and national awards for its transportation programs, andhas expanded its mobility services for the community.

Partners In Care was named the BWI Business Partnership’s 2012 Member of the Year for its collaboration with NSA to help vital NSA employees get from work to home. In presenting the award, Executive Director Linda Greene noted Partners In Care’s “Unique coordination of volunteer community services, enhancing independence and quality of life for a growing number of Maryland citizens, and for assisting special needs local commuters to access jobs at the National Security Agency.”

Partners In Care’s Ride Partners program received the prestigious STAR Award for Excellence from the Beverly Foundation of New Mexico. From 378 applicants across the county, Ride Partners was one of only five programs to receive the award and a $15,000 grant for services for older adults. Helen Kerschner, PhD, president of the Beverly Foundation, lauded the program’s 19 years of service with volunteer drivers.  The program is on track to provide nearly 10,000 arm-in-arm rides in FY 13 for older adults who don’t drive or are unable to utilize public transportation.

Thanks to funding from a federal New Freedom grant, Partners In Care is expanding its transportation program with the addition of wheelchair-accessible buses. The new mobility initiative is an on-demand, fee-for-service program to fill gaps in community services. Partners In Care’s most senior members, who may no longer be able to ride in a volunteer’s car, can utilize the buses for door-to-door, non-fixed route transportation, and can take a caregiver along. The buses are open to individuals, businesses, and organizations for non-emergency medical transportation and social and recreational outings 24-hours a day.

Partners In Care is partnering with Anne Arundel Medical Center and others to utilize the buses to enhance home and community-based services for people transitioning from institutions back to the community and to reduce hospital readmissions.
