Walmart and the Walmart Foundation announced $150,000 in grants to five local Anne Arundel and Prince George’s County organizations for their efforts in creating a long-lasting, positive impact in their communities.  The recipients – Daughter for the Day, Inc., The Light House, My Girlfriend’s House, Prince George’s Child Resource Center, and Share Our Strength – were presented with grants and acknowledged for their work at an event at the Adelphi/Langley Park Family Support Center.

“Walmart and the Walmart Foundation are excited to support organizations that have such an important impact on the local community,” said Alex Barron, Regional Manager, Senior Director for Walmart.  “We are dedicated to helping those in need in the communities we serve.”

The event brought all of the grantees together with members of the community.  The Family Support Center families who attend the Healthy Families program twice a week joined and entertained the guests with a song called “Friends.”

The grants announced earlier this month are a part of the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program, a nationwide initiative that awards grants to organizations that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S. The Light House, a homeless prevention support center, located in Annapolis, MD, was awarded $25,000.

The grant will be used to support expenses needed to operate the Light House’s B.E.S.T program, which was started in 2010 and with funding from a Ladders for Success grant from the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County. B.E.S.T. has become a core program at the Light House that builds job training skills to help our clients secure sustainable employment and permanent housing. Clients participate in a 12 week training program that includes one week of assessment, three weeks of basic skills training followed by eight weeks of training and paid internships in specific disciplines including Culinary Arts, Facilities Maintenance and soon to include Data Entry and Retail.

“In Anne Arundel County, the Light House works to break the cycle of homelessness and provide services that empower people as they transition to self-sufficiency,” said Pam Siemer, Director of Development of The Light House, Inc.  “The Light House is proud to partner with Walmart and the Walmart Foundation to support services for those in our community who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.”

In 2010, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation made a historic $2 billion commitment to help end hunger in America. The Fighting Hunger Together initiative will provide 1.1 billion pounds of food from Walmart facilities and give $250 million to hunger relief organizations through 2015. Walmart also committed to raising awareness about the issue of hunger in America to its millions of customers and associates and to collaborate with business, government, food manufacturers and other corporations to help fight hunger.
