Reverse Prostitution Sting Nets 10 Arrests. Ten men were arrested during a reverse prostitution sting in Howard County, police said. Female officers in plain clothes worked undercover in areas targeted by residents’ complaints to determine whether they would be approached and offered money for sex. Detectives and female officers made the arrests along the U.S. 1 corridor in Laurel.

Fire Belches Smoke From Sewage Treatment Plant. Smoke billowed from a fire Tuesday afternoon at a wastewater treatment plant in eastern Baltimore County. Authorities said the fire ignited in a transformer at about 2:45 p.m. at the Back River Wastewater Treatment Plant. SkyTeam 11 reported thick, black smoke rose from the scene as about 40 firefighters using 16 pieces of equipment worked to extinguish the blaze.

Coon Hunt Court Gets New Street Name. Howard County officials said residents of Coon Hunt Court, a street in the Oakland Mills Village of Columbia, have successfully achieved their effort for a street name change. The name change was prompted by the negative racial connotations that have created a disturbance in the community and caused the street sign to be stolen numerous times over the years.

Teen’s Slaying Sparks Homophobia Concern.  The slaying of a Baltimore teenager is prompting some community leaders to address what they call a double bias — homophobia in the black community. Desean Bowman was shot to death at a gas station in early June. Bowman’s family said the openly gay teen was wearing women’s clothing when he was killed by another black man who police still haven’t identified.
