Police Seek Public’s Help On Reported Dog Attack

NOTE: The original post had a tag of “pit bull.” This was inadvertent and a result of an auto-tagging feature. The tag has been removed as the police report clearly states that it was either an American Bulldog or a shepherd mix with long hair. We regret the error.

On July 24, 2012, at approximately 7:18 p.m., officers from the Western District responded to the Odenton Shopping Center in Odenton to speak with Fire Department personnel regarding an earlier dog bite incident in Gambrills.

Upon arrival, officers learned that at approximately 6:38 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a medical facility in the 1100 block of Annapolis Road for a dog bite victim. At that location, the 27-year-old male victim indicated that he was attacked earlier by a dog and sustained serious injuries to his upper and lower extremities. Paramedics treated the victim and then transported him to Baltimore Washington Medical Center. An initial description of the dog indicated that it was possibly a 100 pound, brown and black American Bull Dog with no collar and fatty ripples around the neck area.

Officers responded to the hospital and learned from the victim that he was walking in the area of Dicus Mill Road and Burns Crossing Road when he observed a dog. The dog increased its pace and the victim then ran across the street, where he fell to the ground and was attacked by the dog. During the attack, the victim reported being bit multiple times, but was ultimately able to fend the dog off. The dog ran in the direction of a nearby landfill and the victim was driven to the aforementioned medical facility on Annapolis Road. A witness reported that the dog in question may have possibly been a Shepherd Mix with long hair. Patrol officers and Animal Control officers conducted a canvass of the area with assistance from the Aviation unit, but were unable to locate the dog.

At this time, the incident remains under investigation. Animal Control officers are continuing to search for the dog involved and are requesting anyone with information on this incident or with information on the location of the dog to contact Animal Control at 410-222-8900 ext.3016.
