The Friends of Broadneck Park (FBP) were pleased to learn the request from County Executive, John R. Leopold for funding which allows for the upgrade and improvements to the playground at Broadneck Park was approved by the County Council as part of the FY13 budget.
“We are very grateful to our friends groups around the County who do so much to benefit our parks,” said County Executive John R. Leopold. “I am pleased that this work can go forward to make the park more accessible to disabled individuals. We are proud of our many improvements in this regard, including Freedom Field at Lake Waterford Park in North County.”
Friends of Broadneck Park, and the Department of Recreation and Parks, are determined to make the playground a recreational destination for all children. In March 2012, federal law was passed which requires new and renovated playgrounds to provide accessibility to children with disabilities.
Broadneck Park will have the first playground in Anne Arundel County to comply with the new Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.
“We are impressed with the dedication and passion of the Friends of Broadneck Park”, said Rick Anthony, Director of Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. “Our department is delighted to be working with this group to reach the common goal of making improvements to the playground at Broadneck Park and providing a safe and healthy recreation area for the children”.
FBP is a community group working with Broadneck Area Youth Sports. FBP is hosting several family friendly events this summer including a Touch-A-Truck fundraiser and food drive, and golf tournament at Bay Hills Golf Club. For more information please visit www.friendsofbroadneckpark.com
