Chesapeake Children’s Museum To Participate In Assessment Program

The Chesapeake Children’s Museum has been selected to participate in a nationwide Museum Assessment Program (MAP).  Through guided self-study and on-site consultation with a museum professional over a one-year period, participation in MAP will empower the Chesapeake Children’s Museum to better serve the children and families of Annapolis by working towards the highest professional standards of the museum field.

The Museum Assessment Program is administered by the American Association of Museums, the only organization representing the nation’s entire museum community and dedicated to promoting excellence within the museum field for over 100 years.  The program is funded by the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.  MAP advances best practices and fosters improvement in museums through a confidential process of self-study, peer review and implementation.  Museums use the assessment process to strengthen operations, build capacity, and enhance communication throughout the organization and in response to community needs.

At the Chesapeake Children’s Museum, the MAP process will be undertaken by a team of four members of the museum’s board of directors and staff, including Wayne Taylor, president of the museum’s board, and Dr. Deborah Wood, founder and executive director of the museum.  The museum, which celebrates its twentieth anniversary this year, currently has openings on its board of directors.  Community members interested in serving on the board may contact Wayne Taylor at (443) 871-4711 for more information about the positions.  “This is a wonderful opportunity for reflecting on what we want the museum to be and working together to make it happen,” said Wood.

Since its creation in 1981, the MAP program has served over 4,300 small and mid-sized museums, including art, history, science and technology, children’s, natural history, historic houses, nature centers, botanical gardens, and zoos.  For more information, including a complete list of museums participating in MAP, please visit www.aam-us.org/map, call (202) 289-9118 or e-mail [email protected].
