12oz Regatta Planned For August 18th

The “12oz Regatta” is open to the public and is fun for competitors and spectators alike! This regatta allows skippers to exercise their ingenuity in creating the fastest model sailing vessels from common household items and at least one empty beer can (soda can for kids class).  To ensure fair competition, all completed boats must fit within the provided “bucket” and only be constructed of the provided materials.   All boats will be measured and examined for compliance prior to racing.

Proceeds will benefit Annapolis Community Boating for their mission in providing accessible boating for all.

Competitors may sail in the following classes (subject to approval by the race committee, and minimum  number of entries per class):

  • Root Beer Class (for children 12 and under with adult supervision)
  • Sport Class (Boat must have a beer can(s) in original shape used in construction)
  • Grand Prix (Advanced class with very few rules and very competitive).
  • Sponsor Challenge (for local businesses, various sponsorship levels available)

Entrants will receive buckets and the materials with which to build their boats at a Skippers’ Meeting held prior to the event. Racing will be conducted in a “round robin” format, with winners in the Grand Prix class earning the honor of having the skipper and boat name engraved on the perpetual trophy displayed at the Boatyard Bar and Grill.  Other prizes will be awarded to the top competitors. Food and beverages will be available for purchase and there will be live music throughout the day, including music by Blue Suede Bop.

Spectators are also encouraged to heartily cheer on the racers!
