MDE: Rains, Cooler Temps Could Slow Fish Kills. The weather could come to the rescue for fish in Maryland waters. Officials with the Maryland Department of the Environment said they believe recent rains and cooler temperatures could slow the recent fish kills, but they said it’s still too early to tell. MDE officials said the latest oxygen readings are getting higher, which is a good sign because a lack of oxygen caused by algae has been suffocating the fish, but levels have been dropping back down at night, so there’s no guarantee of positive results.
