New Ms. Maryland Senior America Receives Crown

| June 22, 2012, 11:23 AM | 0 Comments

At a June 18 breakfast recognizing volunteers at the South County Senior Activity Center, the new Ms. Maryland Senior America 2012, Mahal Maria May of Davidsonville, received her crown from the 2011 winner, Jean Milazzo of Friendship. This makes the sixth member of the center to have won the opportunity to be in the Ms. Senior America pageant since 1999.

Other South County Senior Activity Center winners have included Mei Yu Green of Gambrills, Phyllis Bilhuber of Annapolis, Marcie Davis of Dundalk (representing the state of Delaware), and Joyce Clautice of Annapolis. Many of the winners have all participated in the South County Show Stoppers, an entertainment troupe.

Mrs. May will compete for the national title in October in Atlantic City, performing a hula in an authentic costume for her talent. The event also includes an evening gown competition, a private interview with the judges, and a presentation on the contestant’s philosophy of life. The contest was started in 1980 to recognize women age 60 and older who have reached “the age of elegance.”

She volunteers for many community projects including “Bountiful Backpacks” with the South Anne Arundel Rotary Club, where each Friday afternoon the neediest children at two elementary schools are sent home with backpacks full of non-perishable food items to sustain the children and their families through the weekend. She and Rotary Club members serve more than 60 children and their families every week. She also helps to prepare and deliver 125 bag lunches to the Light House Shelter each month, tutors children and foreign language speaking adults in reading and English, and performs with the Show Stoppers among other activities.

Sharon Poet, South County Senior Center director, thanked the volunteers who provided more than 10,500 hours of service at the center during FY2012.
