Dr. Jane Snider Stepping Aside At Summit School

Dr. Jane R. Snider, Founding Director of The Summit School, has announced that she will step down from her role at the school, following next school year. Dr. Snider founded the school in 1989, was Head of School until 2010, and then assumed the position of Executive Director to focus on marketing and fundraising for Summit. Dr. Snider will apply her skills and experience in leadership and business development to new arenas, while consulting with Summit during her transition. Dr. Snider will create new initiatives to support nonprofits and schools with organizational development needs. She will also guide families whose children are struggling in school.

Through her vision, leadership, and hard work, Dr. Snider assembled a team that created a state-of-the-art school for children who have dyslexia. She recruited teachers and instilled in them Summit’s science-based and results-based approach to teaching. During Summit’s early years, she moved the new school from one temporary campus to another, while fundraising, acquiring, and building the school’s permanent campus which is situated on 15 acres in Edgewater, MD. Since its inception in 1989, The Summit School has helped more than 1,800 students through its day school, tutoring services, testing services, and summer camp programs.

For her outstanding achievements, Dr. Snider has received more than 13 awards and honors, such as Maryland’s Top 100 Women in 1999, SmartCEO’s Brava! Women Business Achievement Award in 2011, and recently the YWCA’s Tribute to Women and INdustry (TWIN) Award in 2012. Dr. Snider’s efforts have raised millions of dollars for The Summit School which will ensure the future of the school’s program.

Dr. Snider has been instrumental in recruiting her successor, Dr. Joan Mele-McCarthy. Dr. Mele-McCarthy was an early friend and advisor to Summit, developing the school’s speech/language program before accepting a political appointment as senior policy advisor in the U.S. Department of Education. Dr. Mele-McCarthy returned to Summit in 2005 as the Director of Education and, now, Head of School. Dr. Mele-McCarthy will take on the role of Executive Director after Dr. Snider steps down.

The Summit School educates bright students with dyslexia and other learning differences. The day school enrolls 100 students with an overall 4:1 student to staff ratio. Families travel regionally and internationally to benefit from this specialized program. www.thesummitschool.org.
