Chesapeake Wingstock Festival A Rousing Success

On June 9th, 802 people pigged out. Well, maybe they chickened out at the 1st Annual Chesapeake Wingstock Festival held at (and as a benefit for) the beautiful Camp Letts along the banks of the Rhode River in Edgewater.
The family friendly event is the reincarnation of the Rocking on the Rhode event of years gone by. And judging from these photos and a post event interview, it seems to have blown it away.
The day was filled with music from many local bands, a large kid’s area, and of course plenty of wings and refreshment to quell any appetite. The highlight of the day was a wing eating contest. Alex Aiello, from Severna Park was the winner eating nearly a pound and a half in two minutes! The organizers have said that they are looking into making this a food-eating sanctioned event in the future.
Of course there was a competition and there were two champs crowned with the title BEST WINGS!  The West End Grill won the People’s Choice Award with their traditional “Buffalo Style” wings and (believe it or not) Killarney House won the Judge’s Choice with “Thai Chili” wings.
Preliminary estimates show that the event raised more than $10,000 to support the summer programs at Camp Letts and organizers have already released the date for next year’s event–June 8, 2013–so mark your calendars!
Some lessons were learned with the large crowd this year–next year there will be two lanes for entrance–one for those with pre-purchased tickets and another for those who need to purchase tickets the day of the event. They are also considering allowing guests to arrive by boat–there are some logistics needed, but this might be a fantastic addition to the day!
