Baysox Battle In The Rain

1997–2007, primary

The Baysox (34-37) battled the elements and the Reading Phillies (40-31) in their 6-3 win Friday night. Trailing 3-0 before a one hour and four minute rain delay, the Baysox scored six unanswered runs after resuming play to win the game.

The play on defense was sloppy as a combined four errors by the two teams led to five unearned runs being scored. All three of the Baysox runs in their go-ahead seventh inning were unearned after three errors by Reading.

“We got some good swings on their bullpen after the rain delay,” Baysox Manager Gary Kendall said. “And it turned out to be a strong come from behind win against a good ball club.”

Baltimore Orioles right-handed reliever Matt Lindstrom pitched the first inning and a third for the Baysox on a Major League Rehab Assignment. He allowed three runs (one earned) on three hits while walking one batter.

Reading jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first inning against Lindstrom. Tim Kennelly started off the game by reaching on a fielding error by third baseman Buck Britton and he moved to second base when Cesar Hernandez singled to center field. Darin Ruf drew a walk to load the bases and Brandon Tripp plated one run when he singled to the pitcher. Leandro Castro grounded into a force out that eliminated Tripp at second but also plated Hernandez for the second run. With two outs, Miguel Abreu singled to center field to score Ruf and give the R-Phils a 3-0 lead.

The rains came in the top of the fourth inning, causing a one hour and four minute delay. Baysox pitcher Tim Bascom was removed from the game and replaced by a reliever, but Reading starting pitcher Julio Rodriguez returned to the mound for the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Baysox took advantage of the pitcher coming back from a long break to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Robbie Widlansky drew a lead off walk and moved to second base when shortstop Manny Machado singled to right field. With one out, left fielder Josh Barfield singled to third base to load the bases and Britton followed with a double to right field that plated two runs, but Barfield was thrown out at the plate for the second out. Catcher Brian Ward kept the hits coming with a single to right field that plated Britton and tied the score 3-3.

Bowie benefitted from three errors to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning against Reading reliever Michael Cisco. Ward reached on a throwing error by R-Phils shortstop Troy Hanzawa to start the inning and he moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by center fielder Antoan Richardson. Second baseman Jonathan Schoop also reached on a throwing error by Hanzawa that moved Ward to third base. First baseman Rhyne Hughes kept things going with a single to left field that plated Ward and runners advanced to second and third base after a throwing error by R-Phils left fielder Brandon Tripp. Widlansky then reached on a fielder’s choice, but Schoop beat the throw home to score the second run of the inning. Machado followed with a double to left field that plated Hughes to give the Baysox a 6-3 lead.

With his aunt and uncle in the crowd after flying in from San Francisco, left handed reliever Chris Petrini had one of his best outings of the season as he took the mound for the Baysox after the rain delay. He pitched four scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Baysox.

“After a rain delay, I was just trying to come out there and throw strikes – keep the tempo up a little bit and try to help our guys get back in the dugout to hit,” Petrini said. “It was a long night so anything I could do to speed up the pace was good. I just tried to pound the zone and stick with it.”

Kyler Newby threw the final two innings to get his second save of the season.  He struck out five batters in the game and allowed just one hit.

Michael Cisco gave up three unearned runs in the seventh inning and got the loss for the Phillies.
