Alzheimer’s Association

The Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit organization which seeks to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through advancement of research, to enhance care and support for individuals, their families and caregivers, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. Volunteer opportunities include: office & clerical assistance including data entry and mailings, community outreach representatives including those to attend Health Fairs and speakers, helpline specialist, and family support group facilitators. In addition, volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising events such asWalk to End Alzheimer’s, Galas, and Charity Golf. Currently, Community Outreach volunteers, age 21 and up, are needed to attend local health fairs, sporting events, social events, charity campaigns, and other public venues to provide information about Alzheimer’s disease, our services, and ways to give back. Annapolis Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed serve the shelter and its clients with specialized skills such as accounting, medicine, law, and carpentry. The hours are flexible for many tasks and training is provided. In addition to volunteers, the shelter has an immediate need for pantry food items because of a greatly increased demand for lunches.   • ·         8am–Noon, Sat., May 19, 2012, Garden Planting Project: The Light House is planting its first vegetable garden and we need volunteer help.  We have built 117 linear feet of garden boxes that now need to be filled with dirt and plants.  We need you to bring your wheel barrels to move the dirt and garden tools to help us create a beautiful garden for our residents to maintain. Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services

The Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services (DSS) is looking for clerical volunteers for the Back to School Program to help answer phones and enter data into the computer at our 80 West Street, Annapolis office location.   The Back to School Program is a partnership between DSS and AnneArundel County Public Schools, which provides 4500 low-income elementary school children with backpacks and school supplies.  If you have good computer skills and have a passion for helping others, please contact Tanya Steele, Special Program/Volunteer Coordinator at 410 269-4461 or email-[email protected]


Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank

Founded in 1988 their mission is to fight hunger by assuring that all county citizens in need have access to food and other necessities.  Especially needed: volunteers with pick-up trucks to pick up food donations during the day and help with phones, copying, other office duties (8:30 am – 2:30 pm), data base, computers, webmaster. Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers, in small groups, and ESL tutoring. Bello Machre

This nonprofit provides loving homes for adults and children with developmental disabilities. Bello Machre is currently offering a variety of opportunities including: someone to pick up pastry donations from Starbucks; a volunteer with sewing experience to help a resident artist with putting together a display for next year’s art show: friendly and outgoing individual to serve as a scheduling assistant; and, a development assistant to help manage the volunteer program.  Contact Evette Watson at 443-702-3064 or [email protected].   • ·         6:30 am – 1:00 pm, Sat., Jun. 9, 2012, Every Step Counts Fundraiser: The event will be held at the Anne Arundel Community College inArnold and there will be a variety of event activities including: Big Vanilla Climbing Wall, Music, Prizes, Face Painting, Lulu the Clown, and much, much, more. Friends of Back Creek Nature Park

This nonprofit organization assists the City of Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department with the preservation, restoration, and enhancement of the park. Volunteers of all ages are welcome from supervised youngsters to adults, including Master Gardeners. There are a myriad of other opportunities for participating in and supporting the BCNP mission, including board and general members, volunteers, project leaders, donors, partners, sponsors, etc.  Projects can be carved out for volunteers who want to come by at their convenience and take responsibility for a particular sub-task or project. MD Office of Tourism Development Welcome Center Program

Volunteer at one of Maryland’s Welcome Centers by joining the award winning Ambassador program.  The volunteer staff welcomes visitors and local residents coming to the Welcome Centers for Maryland information. They also offer assistance with directions and transportation options, hotel accommodations, assist visitors with itineraries, greet motor coaches and work with tourism industry and private sector representatives within Maryland.   Each volunteer works at least one 4-hour shift every week at the Welcome Center desk: Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday. All Centers are closed on all state holidays and May 28, 2010. The Maryland Welcome Centers are located in Howard County on I-95.  Training is provided and volunteer activities are planned throughout the year. Medstar Harbor Hospital Emergency Preparedness Drill, Thurs., May 31, 2012

Volunteers are needed to act as victims of a radiation disaster from 8–11:00 am, Thurs., May 31, 2012 at Medstar Harbor Hospital, 3001 S. Hanover St.,Baltimore, MD 21225. You will participate in a decontamination exercise overseen by the hospital’s administrative and medical professionals. Volunteers are welcome to come in “costume” depicting radiation burns. The only physical requirement is that you can stand for a lengthy period of time. All participants will be required to sign a release form. To participate, you must register by calling 410-350-2563 or online at and choose Special Events under category. Space is limited and you must attend for the full 3 hours.
