Environmental Officials Investigate Fish Kill.  Maryland environmental officials are investigating a fish kill at an Anne Arundel County creek after the discovery of 6,000 dead fish floating in Marley Creek. Environmental officials said they believe recent algae blooms and a large amount of recent rainfall in the Glen Burnie area may have contributed to the deaths.

US Naval Academy’s First Black Graduate Dies. The first black graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy has died, according to an announcement on the academy’s Facebook page.  Retired Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown was a member of the Class of 1949 who was born in Baltimore and later moved to Washington, D.C. Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Michael H. Miller’s statement indicated Brown was the first member of his family to attend college. He went to Howard University before his appointment to the academy in 1945.

Severna Park Woman Injured In Pasadena Crash.  Police in Anne Arundel County said a 53-year-old woman was seriously injured in a one-car crash early Wednesday morning in Pasadena. Officers were called to the 8200 block of Waterford Road about 1 a.m., where they found Mary Elizabeth Hughes, of Severna Park, near her vehicle. Police said Hughes had been driving when, for unknown reasons, her car left the right side of the road, vaulted into a wooded area, hit several trees and then overturned.

Crownsville Teen Wins National Prize For Developing Pancreatic Cancer Test. There has been a breakthrough in the fight against pancreatic cancer, and it’s all thanks to a 15-year-old Anne Arundel County teen and his mom, who drove him to Johns Hopkins University every night after school to test his theory in a lab. North County High School freshman Jack Andraka won what is considered the Olympics of science fairs with a diagnostic breakthrough in cancer treatment. The Crownsville 15-year-old won a $75,000 grand prize in this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for his new way to test for early-stage pancreatic cancer.
