Light House Pantry To Expand

| May 30, 2012, 11:14 AM | 0 Comments

Earlier this month, the Light House Shelter, A Homeless Prevention Support Center, located at 10 Hudson Street in Annapolis, broke ground for a 400 square foot expansion of the existing food pantry.

“Due to the huge need and the overwhelming generosity of this community to meet that need, we literally did not have enough space to house the shelves for the donated food for the pantry program. Now there will be enough room for canned goods, toiletries and frozen meat,” explained Elizabeth Kinney, Executive Director of the Light House Shelter.

Funds from the Capital Campaign are being used to complete the project, which is being built by Hamel Builders, Inc., the original builders of the new shelter.

The Light House kitchen and food pantry program is an integral part of the shelter’s core programs. Through the donations of food and volunteer labor, the Food Pantry Program distributes thousands of bags of groceries to families who sometimes must choose between feeding their family or paying rent or medical bills. In addition, the Light House provides tens of thousands of bagged lunches as well as hot breakfasts, lunches and dinners to residents and the community in need throughout the year.

This past year, thanks to hundreds of volunteers and donors, the Light House provided:

  • 43,454 bagged lunches
  • 4,800 grocery bags of donated food
  • 19,000 articles of clothing

The number of hot meals served is staggering: 10,750 hot breakfasts, 13,000 hot lunches and 8,500 hot dinners.
