French Schooners To Visit USNA

| May 11, 2012, 11:30 AM | 0 Comments

Two French Navy Schooners will dock at the U.S. Naval Academy Saturday, May 12 through Wednesday, May 16 as a part of the 200thanniversary celebration for the War of 1812.  The schooners will be open to the public Sunday, May 13 and Tuesday, May 15 from 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. and will be moored at Farragut sea wall.

Today the Étoile and Belle-Poule are both used as training vessels for the French Navy. Launched in 1932, both schooners were intended to be fishing vessels; however in 1940 they joined the Free French Forces during World War II. In recognition of their loyalty, both schooners retain the honor of flying the French flag with the cross of Lorraine.

The Étoile and Belle-Poule are traveling up the east coast after competing in a tall ship race in Savannah, Ga.  After their port-stop in Annapolis, the schooners will travel to Canada with six Naval Academy midshipmen onboard who will be using the sailing experience as a summer training opportunity.

Visitors to the Naval Academy may walk through Gate 1 (King George Street) and Gate 3 (Maryland Avenue) of the academy and will be required to show valid, government-issued picture identification. Vehicles without Department of Defense decals are not permitted on Naval Academy grounds.  Authorized vehicles may enter through Gate 1 (King George Street) or Gate 8 (Maryland Route 450).  Handicapped visitors with proper decals and identification are permitted through Gate 1 during normal business hours and may be subject to a vehicle inspection. All bags are subject to search.
