Chesapeake Bay Trust Receives 4-Star Charitable Rating For Tenth Straight Year

The Chesapeake Bay Trust ranks in the top 1% of charities nationwide according to Charity Navigator, the nation’s largest independent evaluator of charities.  For 10 consecutive years, the Trust has received a 4-star rating for its sound fiscal management and commitment to accountability and transparency.  According to Charity Navigator evaluators, this ranking, the highest available for a nonprofit organization, indicates that the Chesapeake Bay Trust adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way.

“On behalf of Charity Navigator, we are proud to announce Chesapeake Bay Trust has earned our tenth consecutive 4-star rating.  Only 1% of the charities we rate have received at least 10 consecutive 4-star evaluations, indicating that Chesapeake Bay Trust outperforms most other charities in America. This “exceptional” designation from Charity Navigator differentiates Chesapeake Bay Trust from its peers and demonstrates to the public it is worthy of their trust,” according to Ken Berger, Charity Navigator’s president & CEO in a written statement.

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is a Maryland-based nonprofit, grant-making organization dedicated to improving the Chesapeake Bay and its rivers through environmental education, community outreach and Bay restoration.  Since 1985, the Trust has awarded more than $45 million in grants to organizations, schools, and community groups to restore Maryland’s shorelines, educate schoolchildren about the environment, green local neighborhoods and clean-up local rivers and streams. In 2011 alone, the Trust awarded $5.2 million in grants that engaged over 110,000 students, teachers and volunteers throughout the state who removed 580 tons of trash from Maryland streams and rivers, planted 95,000 native plants and trees, and restored 70 acres of wetlands, oyster reefs and streamside buffers.

“The Chesapeake Bay Trust prides itself on the efficiency, accountability, and integrity of its grant-making programs and special initiatives,” said Jana Davis, interim executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Trust. “We are so pleased to be recognized by Charity Navigator for our financial accountability and for our work to help restore the Chesapeake Bay and educate and engage as many Marylanders as possible.”

The Chesapeake Bay Trust is supported by the sale of the Maryland Treasure the Chesapeake license plate, donations to the Chesapeake Bay and Endangered Species Fund on the Maryland State income tax form, donations from individuals and corporations, and partnerships with private foundations and federal and state agencies. Fully 90 percent of the Trust’s expenditures are directed to its Chesapeake Bay restoration and education programs.
