Anne Aundel Crime Down 8.7% For 2011

Anne Arundel County Police Department

The Anne Arundel County Police Department remains committed to providing the highest level of police service to our county. Our citizen partnership allows us to understand community concerns and enables us to identify and solve problems together. As a result of the department’s commitment to public safety and cooperation with our local, state, and federal partners, the county realized an overall reduction of Part I crime.

Based on the department’s 2011 year-end Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) data, total Violent Crime was reduced by 7.7% with total Property Crime being reduced by 8.9%, for an overall reduction of 8.7% for Total Part I Crimes. Of the Violent crimes reported, robberies were down 7.7%, rapes were down 21.7%, and aggravated assaults were down 7%.  Homicides rose slightly in 2011 with 14 victims as compared to 13 victims in 2010.

Of those Property crimes reported, burglaries were down 22.1%, thefts were down 3%, auto thefts were down 32.4%, and arson was down 36.1%.

The Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit continues to utilize analytical tools and technology to its maximum capability. By using real time crime data to immediately identify crime trends, the department can deploy department resources to areas of concern to suppress crime.

Moving forward, the department plans to place an increased emphasis on its Repeat Offenders Proactive Enforcement (R.O.P.E.) program, which tracks and monitors repeat offenders who commit a disproportionate amount of crime in Anne Arundel County. The success of this program is achieved through a collaborative effort with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners, who enhance the agency’s abilities to educate these repeat offenders and reduce their risk of recidivism.

“I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication demonstrated by our sworn members, communication personal, and our professional support staff. I would like to extend my grateful appreciation for their professionalism and dedication to public safety,” said Chief of Police Colonel James Teare, Sr. “We will continue our cooperative crime fighting efforts with our federal, state, and local partners, and work along with the citizens we serve to make Anne Arundel County the safest place to live, work and raise a family.”

“This data shows that our policing efforts are working and our communities are engaged in keeping their neighborhoods safe,” County Executive Leopold said. “It takes a combination of tactics, from installing streetlights to targeting enforcement in hot spots to deploying resources effectively. I want to congratulate Chief Teare and all of our sworn officers for a job well done.”
