This Week In Volunteering

Anne Arundel Department of Recreation & Parks

Volunteers are needed to help with a Community Beach clean-up at Mayo Beach Park, 4150 Honeysuckle Dr. Edgewater, MD 21037, from 9 am–noon, Sat., April 28, 2012. Tasks include planting and cleaning out flower beds and cleaning and working on camp buildings to prepare for summer day camps. History of the area and discussion of the water access and water trails will be available. Wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, work gloves, and if available: gardening tools (marked with your name) including rakes, trowels, hoes, etc. (some tools provided). Tasks will be assigned. Individuals, families and groups are welcome to register to volunteer.  Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult (1 adult per 6 children). Bay Theatre Company

The Bay Theatre is a professional, nonprofit theatre company founded in 2002 in Annapolis, MD The theatre company also promotes theatre education for students of all ages and provides working opportunities for actors, designers, technicians and interns. Volunteers, age 16 and up, are needed for office assistance, one day per week, at the box office, and as ushers for performances. Also, hosts are needed for many of our visiting actors and directors that need a place to stay while they are in production. There is an immediate need for a House Volunteer/Manager. They would come on show nights at 6pm and organize to make sure everyone is in place, the audience gets in their seats smoothly etc. For more information contact Janet Luby at [email protected] or call 410-268-1333. Community Preservation & Development Corp. (CPDC) Wiley H. Bates Senior Residence

The Bates Senior Residence is operated in Annapolis by CPDC, a nonprofit organization that creates and preserves financially sound, socially responsible affordable housing for low and moderate income individuals and families. There is a current need for an Aerobics for the Mind leader from 5-6 pm, on Wed. evenings twice a month to assist the Resident Services Manager with researching and leading exercises that help stimulate older adults’ cognitive skills including: attention, memory, language skills, pattern recognition and planning. In addition, a Book Club Facilitator is needed to engage Bates Book Club members (group of senior citizens) in reading classic, popular, and fiction novels then lead them in thought-provoking discussions to delve into the book every month.  Also, a Computer Instructor & Technician is needed to assist Bates senior residents with learning basic computer and internet skills to enhance their ability to maintain social connections and to express themselves in writing.  The volunteer will also assist residents address their individual PC technical concerns. Creating Communities

Adult volunteers are needed for the award-winning Creating Communities Arts Mentorship Academy, June 18-22 at Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts. Volunteers will help mentors run various arts classes, greet parents and guardians, serve simple meals, take attendance and participate in program activities. Volunteers are asked to give a minimum of 2-3 full days out of five for program continuity. No artistic experience is required. The Arts Mentorship Academy serves 100 economically-disadvantaged yet talented youth from Anne Arundel County. All volunteers must pass a basic background check and be ready for random drug testing. Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over, are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. There is a current need for specific men’s and women’s clothing items; donations will be accepted only on the first and third Saturdays of each month, from 9am –Noon, and volunteers are also needed from 8:45am–noon on those days to help process the clothing.  If you are available to help, please contact the Shelter to be scheduled. Extra volunteers may be needed for the following:

  • ·         8:30 am, Fri., June 8, 2012, 9th Annual Friends of the Light House Golf Tournament: Sponsors and participants are being sought for this fundraiser being held at Compass Pointe in Pasadena. All proceeds go to support the Annapolis Light House Shelter. Registration starts at 7:00 am, and the shotgun start at 8:30 am. Players will enjoy a light breakfast before tee off, complimentary beverages throughout, and a delicious lunch prepared by the chefs at Compass Pointe.  Throughout the day, opportunities for raffle prizes will be available, and awards will be given at lunch for various contests, including 1st – 3rd low net foursome, men’s/women’s closest to the pin, and the men’s/women’s longest drive. METAvivor Research & Support, Inc.

This nonprofit organization, run largely by patients with metastatic/Stage IV breast cancer, supports others and builds awareness about this disease, and raises money to fund research grants specifically for metastatic breast cancer. A variety of volunteer opportunities are available to support the organization and its mission. Assistance is needed with fundraising, website design and maintenance, and advertising in the media.   • ·         8:00 AM, April 14, 2012, METAvivor Adventure Race:  This third annual triathlon race, which will include a 2-mile kayak, 15 mile bike and a 3.1 mile run begins at Key School and runs through downtown Annapolis, MD. Scenic Rivers Land Trust’s 7th Annual Walk for the Woods, Sat., Apr. 14, 2012

This seventh annual event takes place in the Bacon Ridge Natural Area, a 630-acre preserve of woods, wetlands, and streams in Crownsville, MD.  SRLT invites local residents to experience this natural area owned by Anne Arundel County, through the Marbury Road/Farm Road entrance which is not usually open to the public.  The “Walk for the Woods” will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with participants welcome to arrive any time before 2 p.m., choosing to hike on their own or join a guided hike. SRLT is pleased to offer this hike as a free event, but welcomes and needs the public’s donations in order to continue conserving and protecting natural lands in Anne Arundel County. No strollers are permitted. Trails may be muddy; sturdy shoes are a must. Well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcomed beginning at 10 a.m., but are not allowed on the guided bird, nature, or reptile hikes.  In the event of heavy rain on the 14th, the hike will be held on Sun., April 15. YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County

The YWCA Annapolis and Anne Arundel County provides comprehensive integrated services for individuals and families through domestic violence shelter and hotline; sexual assault services including a hotline, counseling, support groups and hospital accompaniment for rape victims, legal, career, counseling and family services; a mentoring  program  held after-school for middle school students and an all-girls program located at the high school.
