Secretary Clinton Addresses Midshipmen In Annapolis

| April 10, 2012, 11:15 PM | 1 Comment

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Annapolis this evening to present the Forrestal Lecture to the Brigade of Midshipmen as part of the 2012 Naval Academy Foreign Affairs Conference.

Secretary Clinton says Russia’s refusal to support UN Security Council action on the crisis in Syria is what is keeping its President Bashar al-Assad in power. The Secretary also assured the Brigade that the US would try to persuade Russia (a staunch Syrian ally) to support action that would allow humanitarian access.

She warned of possible civil war due to the violence in Syria and noted that this is the exact thing that Russia has said they are hoping to prevent.

Russia’s refusal to act is keeping Assad in power, well-armed, able to ignore the demands of his own people, the region and the world.

After her lecture, a brief Q&A session was held and she was quizzed about the death of Osama bin Laden as well as Joseph Kony. As a thank you, Secretary Clinton was presented with a USNA track suit which she proudly wore after the presentation when she went outside to meet with some Midshipmen.

The annual undergraduate foreign affairs conference began in 1960 and brings together more than 150 students from the U.S. and foreign countries.

This year the conference focuses on the “Eclipse of the West,” examining where, if not the West, the sources of security, prosperity, stability, innovation, discovery and leadership are found.

Secretary Clinton is a Chicago native and was appointed Secretary of State after nearly four decades in public service as an advocate, attorney, First Lady, and senator. Since her appointment, Clinton has traveled to more than 80 countries representing the United States, advocating for human rights, democracy and civil society.

The Forrestal Lecture Series at the academy was established in 1970 in honor of James V. Forrestal (the first Secretary of Defense) in order to enhance the education, awareness and appreciation of the members of the Brigade of Midshipmen in the social, political and cultural dimensions of the nation and the world.
