The Pipes and Drums was formed in 1996 through an endowment from the USNA Class of 1961. The band is the only active duty pipe band in the Department of the Navy and one of only three active duty pipe bands in the United States Armed Forces.  Members of the band are midshipmen at the Naval Academy and are responsible for all band operations. Currently there are 49 members, ranging in ability from beginner to experienced.

The Pipes and Drums are a performing band providing highland musical support to the Brigade of Midshipmen, as well as the activities of the larger academy community.
