North County High School freshman Jack Andraka and Chesapeake Science Point Public Charter School sophomore Gregory Bekher took home grand award honors at the 45 th annual Anne Arundel County Regional Science and Engineering Fair recently held at North County High School.

More than 300 projects presented by young science stars from across the county were on display. Students from throughout the county won awards and prizes worth thousands of dollars from organizations such as Anne Arundel Community College, Johns Hopkins University, Lockheed Martin, Marine Science and Technology, and Northrop Grumman.

“The judges were blown away by the talent at this year’s competition,” AACPS Coordinator of Science Rochelle Slutskin said. “We are confident in and proud of the work the students put into making this year’s fair successful, which ultimately makes them better scientists – meeting the challenges and addressing real-world problems that could reshape our world for the better.”

With intent to solve two major real-world issues, Andraka and Bekher executed their projects with precision and maturity that indicates promising futures, according to the judges. Creating a device that detects pancreatic cancer down to the stage of growth, Andraka’s project sought an effective, efficient, and economical way to help increase the survival rate among those with the disease.

Bekher’s winning project involved a detection device of a different kind – aimed at finding malicious computer rootkits that hackers use to extract important, seemingly secure data and information.

Both students will compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Pittsburgh in May. More than $4 million in awards and scholarships will be available in that competition.

The Anne Arundel County Regional Science and Engineering Fair is dedicated to promoting science education and recognizing and rewarding student achievement in science. In addition to the grand award winners, 74 county middle and high school students earned first place awards at the fair.
