Son Attacks Mother With Hammer In Cape St. Claire

NOTE: While the police report and Google Maps identifies the address as being in “Cape St. Claire”, several people have contacted us saying that the community was “Walnut Ridge” and that it is not in Cape St. Claire but approaching Cape St. Claire on Cape St. Claire Road.

On March 20, 2012, at approximately 8:08 p.m., officers from the Eastern District responded to the 1300 block of Hazel Nut Court in the Cape St. Claire community for a report of family violence.

Initial information indicated that the 61-year-old female victim was violently assaulted by her 33-year-old son. The victim’s son apparently used a hammer to strike her repeatedly in the head and torso. In fear for her life, the victim fled her home and ran to a nearby neighbor, where she called the police. When units arrived, the suspect had already fled the home. An extensive perimeter was established and a search was conducted as officers believed the suspect may have been on foot.

Utilizing ground units with assistance from K-9 and Aviation, the suspect was eventually located about a half mile away hiding in a heavily wooded area off of Commanders Way. The suspect was taken into custody without incident approximately 90 minutes after the assault occurred. The suspect was then charged with Attempted Second Degree Murder, First and Second Degree Assault and Reckless Endangerment. The victim was transported to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where she is currently in serious, but stable condition.

Suspect: Robert N. Benscoter, 33, of 1359 Hazel Nut Court, Annapolis, Md
