Maryland Plays New Role In GOP Primary. As the dust continues to settle from Super Tuesday, the race for a Republican presidential nominee is still murky, which means Maryland could play a role in the final nomination.
McDaniel College political science professor Herb Smith said if Romney and Santorum continue to duke it out for the title, Maryland could help in the final nomination.”It’s still a very close race. Every vote counts, like it always does,” Smith said.

Bill Would Expand Maryland Sales Tax. A budget-balancing proposal would extend the state sales tax to services, from shoe repair to fitness clubs. WBAL-TV 11 News reporter David Collins said the bill was not well-received Tuesday at a House Ways and Means Committee hearing, where 74 people signed up to discuss the proposal.Dozens of services on the bill that would be subject to the state’s 6 percent sales tax include vehicle repair, cable television, property management, tax preparation, docking or landing, dating and escort services, barber and beauty salon, and tanning, massage and physical fitness facilities.

Doomsday Budget Would Slash Education, Jobs. The so-called “doomsday budget” under consideration in the General Assembly would slash education funding, lay off hundreds of state employees and cut millions in state aid for Baltimore.As an alternative to the governor’s proposed budget, which contains tax and fee increases, lawmakers are considering a spending plan that would balance the budget through cuts alone.

Police Officer Suspended In Wake Of 13-Year Old’s Shooting. Baltimore police suspended an officer Tuesday in connection with the shooting death of a 13-year-old girl in Baltimore over the weekend, according to police. Police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed for 11 News on Tuesday morning that the officer was suspended for his conduct after the shooting. The officer was not named Tuesday, and police declined to comment further.
