Anne Arundel County Exec Leopold Indicted On Sex Charges

UPDATE: Attempts to contact Joanna Conti, Leopold’s opponent in the last election; Dave Abrams, his spokesman; and Chris Trumbauer, County Councilman have been unsuccessful.

UPDATE: The Capital is reporting some of the more salacious details of the indictment including:

Leopold had an ongoing sexual relationship with a Parks and Recreation employee named Connie Casalena, a relationship Leopold both described in graphic detail to his security team and forced them to hide from his longtime girlfriend, Jane Miller….The officers would have to escort Leopold to meet Casalena in parking lots during the work day, sometimes two or three times a week, and then wait for about 45 minutes while Leopold and Casalena conducted a relationship in Casalena’s car.

The indictment said Leopold would then describe the encounter in graphic detail to the officers.

UPDATE: Eye On Annapolis has obtained a copy (PDF) of the statement from the state prosecutor.

Public officials criminally abuse their public trust when they treat public resources as their personal property and public personnel as their personal servants. These abuses will not be tolerated.

Emmet C. Davitt, State Prosecutor

Our media partner, WBAL-TV is reporting that Anne Arundel County Executive John R. Leopold was indicted this afternoon on on charges of misconduct in office on allegations that Leopold misused his police security for his own political and personal benefit.

The indictment also accuses Leopold of inappropriately using county police officers to drive him to parking lots and wait for him while he got into another car and had sex with a county employee.

Calls to Leopold’s office from Eye On Annapolis were not immediately returned.  This story is developing. Please stay tuned.
