Anne Arundel County Public Schools Signature Programs
Opportunities are available for volunteers to contribute to the success of Anne Arundel County high school students by serving on an Advisory Board, conducting mock job interviews with students, providing training in writing resumes, and as being a guest speaker. Maryland Environmental Trust
The Maryland Environmental Trust, which preserves open space by working with owners of farm, forest or historic properties, needs office volunteers, age 20 and up, at our Crownsville office to help with administrative support by managing stewardship materials for use by staff and monitoring volunteers. Tasks may include scanning of slides and easement exhibits, organizing easement information, data entry, preparing and mailing correspondence, and maintaining contact with easement landowners. Hours are flexible and training is provided; basic computer skills are required. A field monitoring volunteer is also needed to visit properties to check compliance with easement restrictions to ensure that protected farms and forests remain undeveloped. Visits are made to significant natural areas, farms and forest land, waterfronts, historic viewsheds and scenic landscapes. Volunteers participate in a one day training session and agree to complete five or more visits. Volunteers should be over 20 years of age, physically able to walk over potentially rugged terrain and have their own transportation. Naval Support Activity Annapolis Exercise, Mon.–Wed., March 19–21, 2012
The Naval Support Activity Annapolis (NSAA) at the United States Naval Academy is seeking volunteers, age 18 and up, for role playing in a series of nationwide Naval installation emergency exercises. Volunteers will report to NSAA in Annapolis and be assigned to play roles for the duration of the exercise. Volunteers will be needed from 12:00–2:30 pm on Mon., 3/19; 8:30–11:00 am, Tues., 3/20; and, 8:30–11:00 am, Wed., 3/21/12. For more information and to sign up, contact NSAA, Lt. Maryland Therapeutic Riding
Located in Crownsville, Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) is a Premier Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center that offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with special needs. Volunteers, ages 14 and up, assist with riding lessons and are needed throughout the week to assist with horse care, barn and facility maintenance. All volunteers are required to attend a training session prior to beginning their volunteer service. - · Gardening Plots: MTR has eight small garden spots on the horse farm that they’d like to have garden clubs or other groups adopt. Each garden can have a sign acknowledging their club. Providence Center
Providence Center is a nonprofit that provides employment, vocational training, recreational, retirement, medical day care, and transportation services to developmentally disabled adults. Volunteer with Providence Center and help make a difference in the lives of those served by the Center. Volunteers are a tremendous asset to our programs. You may have gardening skills to help in our greenhouses, an artistic flair to assist in our Art Institute, an entrepreneurial spirit that can help a participant start his own business, or just the desire to be a friend to someone, spending time over lunch, working on the computer or reading. Volunteers must be at least 16 and must go through a background check. We are happy to work with eligible students fulfilling community service requirements but ask that they volunteer a minimum of 40 hours. Severn River Association Project Clean Stream Project, Sat. March 31, 2012
We need at least 100 people, ages 16 and up, from 9:00 am–noon on Sat. Mar. 31, 2012 (rain or shine), to clean up old dumpsites on Clements Creek and Luce Creeks off the Severn River. These sites are not child friendly as the largest quantities of trash are on steep slopes. All cleanup supplies will be provided, but if you have favorite, comfortable work gloves feel free to bring them. Wear sturdy shoes, important for this site’s terrain.
Volunteers for Clements Creek, will meet at Ram’s Head Roadhouse Tavern, 1773 Generals Highway, about 2 miles north of the Annapolis Mall on Rt. 178; those for Luce Creek, meet at 1920 N. Lawrence Road which is just off Bestgate Road. Lawrence is the first street west of the traffic light at Old Bestgate and Bestgate, and leads to the Unitarian Church which is also sponsoring this project. This effort is part of the Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay’s annual effort, Project Clean Stream. For more information, contact [email protected].
Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County
9 a.m. – Noon, Sat., Apr. 21, 2012, Help Save the Bay Day: Volunteers are needed to help to control storm water runoff by learning how to build a rain-garden, weed and plant garden areas, clean up underbrush, trash and other debris from Lake Waterford Park. Volunteers will meet at the pavilion near the parking lot at 830 Pasadena Rd., Pasadena 21122 at 9 am. Volunteer waivers must be signed, either there or in advance. The waiver form can be emailed and must be co-signed by a parent for volunteers under age 18. Watershed Stewards will be on site to discuss problems facing the Magothy River Watershed and to assign tasks. Participants should wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes. Bring a hat, sunscreen, water, work gloves, and if available: gardening tools (marked with your name) including rakes, trowels, hoes, etc. (some tools will be provided).
