‘LeveL’ Keeps It Interesting And Tasty

Let me start by saying I have been to LeveL many times. I will say upfront that I like LeveL because

a–it is different and has tasty food and

b–because they make the best cocktails.

That said, let me proceed with my most recent visit this weekend. I went on a Friday night with a friend who was treating me to a belated birthday dinner. We had both been there before and the first thing we realized is that they expanded. What was next door? (to the right, clearly not memorable to me, an Annapolitan for 20 years) But I digress. Looks like LeveL busted right through the brick wall (can you do that in Annapolis?) to allow for not only more area but an area that can fit larger tables. Something I think they were lacking due to their size before.

We were quickly seated at a cozy yet loud (yes that has not changed, it is not quiet) table. A friendly waiter asked for drinks etc., we asked for specials. Water arrived immediately and we proceeded to order a bottle of Molly Dooker (no cocktail tonight).

We like to do the smorgasbord thing at LeveL, but only if you go with people who like to share. We ordered the special, Mushroom Ragout in a pastry, followed by the lamb osso bucco, brussel sprouts edemame, and the grilled calamari with crispy capers. I was a little disappointed in the special. The puff pastry was certainly puffy, but it was slightly cold and the ragout, well while it tasted OK, it just didn’t have the zing of mushroom flavor I was expecting and was too salty we both thought. The brussel sprouts were as good as usual, cooked to perfection; and while I am not a huge calamari fan, I thought it was tender with a nice lemony sauce on the plate. The stand out of the evening was most certainly the osso bucco. The gravy was all flavor and not over powered by salt; and the lamb fell right off the bone. The lamb was mild yet tasted like lamb, which doesn’t always happen.

We finished the evening splitting the banana chocolate bread pudding, which was quite tasty. It could have be a little gooier in my book, but still good with lots of banana and chocolate flavors. Overall, another lovely eating experience at LeveL, just wish they’d watch the salt.

Why it’s worth eating here: Portion control, unique small plates, good service, great cocktails.

For fans of: small bistro style restaurants in surrounding areas and good cocktails! (Cucumber margarita rocks among others)
