Annapolis Maritime Museum

The Museum needs volunteers on a continuing basis to maintain and expand its innovative environmental education program, conduct tours to the historic Thomas Point Shoal Lighthouse, restore wooden boats, interpret the Museum’s exhibits to the public, and help with the winter seminar series, the summer concert series, and events like the Annapolis Oyster Roast & Sock Burning in March and the Boatyard Beach Bash in September.   • ·         7 to 8:30 pm, Thursdays, Jan. 26 – March 27, 2012, Winter Maritime Seminar Series: This year’s series is being held at the Museum’s Bay Room from 7 to 8:30 pm and will cover a wide range of topics to commemorate our unique maritime heritage. Anne Arundel County Animal Control

Animal Control is looking to expand its current foster program. The foster application is now available on the website at http://www.aacounty.org/AnimalControl/Resources/AACAC_Foster_Application.pdf. Completed Foster Applications should be sent to 411 Maxwell Frye Rd. Millersville MD 21108. Foster families have a unique opportunity to play a direct role in assisting needy animals that enter Anne Arundel County Animal Control. Please be patient with Animal Control as applications are screened and the foster program is expanded. Anne Arundel CountyLiteracy Council

Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers, in small groups, and ESL tutoring. For information call the office at 410-269-4419. There is an immediate need for volunteer tutors.  Hours are flexible and most work can be done at home.   • ·         7-8 pm, Mon., Feb. 27 and 7-8 pm, Tues., Mar. 6, 2012, Tutor Informational Orientations: The February orientation will be held at the Edgewater Branch and the March session will be held at the Riviera Beach Branch of the AA County Library.   • ·         10:30 am–4 pm, Mar. 17 & 31, 2012, Tutor Training: The training requires attendance at both sessions and will be held at the Edgewater Library. Anne Arundel County Department of Social Services

Volunteer positions are available in a fun energetic office as a Clerical Assistant in the Office of Special Programs. Arts Council of Anne Arundel County, Inc.

The Arts Council is a non-profit foundation which encourages and invests in the visual arts, performing arts, and historic preservation for the people of Anne Arundel County. Volunteers, 18 and older, are needed to help in the office with answering phones and computer input for membership database. Contact April Nyman at 410-222-7949 or [email protected].   • ·         7-11 pm, Sat., Feb. 18, 2012, 14th Annual Mardi Gras Gala: Join us at the Loews Annapolis Hotel for this festive evening as many of our local talents provide a New Orleans experience for our guests.  This year the Gala will begin with a French Quarter reception filled with many NOLA traditions.  The evening will continue with exquisite creole dining, and end on the dance floor to the sounds of “New Monopoly”.  Contact the Arts Council now to reserve tables and to inquire about sponsorships and volunteer opportunities.

 

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake

Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake (HFHC) is a nonprofit which provides simple, decent, affordable houses for deserving families who currently live in substandard conditions in Anne Arundel County and the Baltimore area. Volunteers are needed to help with construction in the county and Baltimore area. Many support volunteer opportunities also exist in providing lunches and serving long-term on committees involved. For Volunteers interested in learning additional construction skills, and are willing to commit to regular volunteer days may want to consider becoming a “Red Hat” (volunteers who serve as construction leaders on build sites). Historic Annapolis Foundation

Volunteers are needed in the areas of museum tours and education, horticulture in the William Paca House gardens, public programs and special events, membership services, and marketing.  On weekdays and weekends, William Paca House docents present tours of the home of a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Historic Annapolis Museum greeters serve as ambassadors of history greeting and informing visitors about museum exhibits that present four centuries of history in the heart of Annapolis.   • ·      1:30 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 11, 2012, William Paca House Volunteer Recruitment Day: This is your chance to become a museum tour guide in your own home town while learning about the 18th Century and how it affected the present.  The event will be held at 186 Prince George St., Annapolis, 21401 and will include a tour of the facility and a short informational session about how to become involved. Participants must be at least 16 years old and pre-register by 5 pm, Fri. Mar. 9, 2012 by contacting Volunteer Coordinator Marcos Salaverria at (410)-267-6312 or marcos.salaverria@annapolis.com. Light House Shelter

This emergency shelter facility provides shelter for single men and women and families and runs a transitional housing program in Annapolis. Volunteers, 18 and over (some Spanish speaking), are needed for a variety of duties associated with the food program, children’s programs, facilities cleaning & maintenance, office and administration, and adult education programs. Pro bono professional volunteers are also needed serve the shelter and its clients with specialized skills such as accounting, medicine, law, and carpentry. The hours are flexible for many tasks and training is provided. In addition to volunteers, the shelter has an immediate need for pantry food items because of a greatly increased demand for lunches. Naval Support Activity Annapolis Exercise, Mon.–Wed., March 19–21, 2012

The Naval Support Activity Annapolis (NSAA) at the United States Naval Academy is seeking volunteers, age 18 and up, for role playing in a series of nationwide Naval installation emergency exercises. Volunteers will report to NSAA in Annapolis and be assigned to play roles for the duration of the exercise. Volunteers will be needed from 12:00–2:30 pm on Mon., 3/19; 8:30–11:00 am, Tues., 3/20; and, 8:30–11:00 am, Wed., 3/21/12. For more information and to sign up, contact NSAA, Lt.
