Serious Crash Snarls Bestgate Road Traffic Monday Night

| January 10, 2012, 10:00 AM | 0 Comments

On January 9, 2012, at approximately 7:19 p.m., officers from the Southern District responded to a report of a motor vehicle collision on Bestgate Road near the ramp for Route 50 Westbound. Officers arrived on scene to discover that a 12-year-old female sustained life threatening injuries in the crash. Crash Investigators from the Traffic Safety Section were dispatched to the crash scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.

The initial investigation revealed that a Chevrolet pick-up was traveling southbound on Bestgate Road approaching the traffic signal at the entrance ramp for Route 50 Westbound. The traffic signal for southbound Bestgate Road changed from green to amber. At that time, the Ford Windstar van, which was stopped at the red signal to enter Route 50, began to travel into the intersection, through the red signal and into the path of the Chevrolet pick-up. The pick-up then struck the passenger side of the van causing the vehicles to rotate and come to final rest on the right hand shoulder.

Preliminarily, neither speed nor alcohol appear to be factors in this crash on the part of either operator, but driver error is a possible contributing factor on the part of operator of the Ford Windstar. The investigation is ongoing.

The vehicles involved were a 2002 White Ford Windstar minivan and a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck.

There were two passengers in the pickup truck from Annapolis. The driver was treated at Anne Arundel Medical Center for minor injuries and the passenger was transported to shock-trauma with serious injuries. The passenger is reported in stable condition.

The minivan was operated by an Annapolis resident who received minor injuries. The passenger in the minivan was the 12 year-old child. She was transported to Johns Hopkins Pediatric Center with life threatening injuries. She is currently listen in critical condition.

Due to the age of the accident victim, Eye On Annapolis has chosen to not publish the names of the people involved.
