3 Injured In 2-Alarm Gen Burnie Fire. Firefighters in Anne Arundel County think an unattended cigarette may have ignited a two-alarm apartment fire Thursday afternoon.As many as 51 firefighters were called to the Tall Pines apartment complex in Glen Burnie at about 3:20 p.m. When they arrived at the scene, they noticed smoke coming from the first and third floors of Building 7878. Rashawn Waysome lives nearby and ran over to check on a friend who lives in the building.”The whole ceiling was burnt. Everything was burnt. The wall was torn apart, and she told me her grandmother was actually on fire,” Waysome said.Lt. Cliff Kooser said a 64-year-old woman was taken to Baltimore Washington Medical Center with serious burns, and two others were treated for unspecified minor injuries.

Pope Elevates Baltimore’s Archbishop To Cardinal. The pope has bestowed a great honor and confidence upon the leader of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, elevating Archbishop Edwin Frederick O’Brien to cardinal.On Friday, Pope Benedict XVI named the 72-year-old O’Brien to the College of Cardinals to serve as an adviser to the pope. As such, O’Brien will be eligible to vote in a papal election until his 80th birthday. A formal ceremony to elevate the new cardinals will be held at the Vatican on Feb. 18.

Macy’s To Close Two Maryland Stores. A Macy’s location in Laurel and a Bloomingdale’s in North Bethesda will be closed.The closures will take effect this spring, according to company officials. Clearance sales will begin at both department stores on Jan. 8.“We continue to be committed to maintaining a healthy portfolio of stores that allows us to focus on growth from our best and most productive locations,” said Terry J. Lundgren, Macy’s chairman, president and chief executive officer.Four other Macy’s locations, along with three Bloomingdale’s stores, will be closed nationwide.

Frederick Police Search For Puppy Shooter. Frederick County authorities are looking for the person who fatally shot a golden retriever puppy near Middletown.Animal Control Director Harold Domer told The Frederick News-Post that the owners found the 7-month-old dog, named Heidi, dead on their property on Station Road on Wednesday afternoon.Domer said three other golden retrievers were found on the property unharmed. He said the shooting occurred sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
