A year ago, Lindale Middle School teachers and administrators camped outside for a week as part of a schoolwide effort to collect more than 7,800 pounds of food for the needy.
They had so much fun, they’re doing it again.
With temperatures scheduled to hover around freezing next week, members of the school’s faculty will camp out until a 1,024-cubic-foot storage container is filled with supplies for the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank. The container was donated by PODS Moving & Storage.
“The support we received not only from our school, but from our community, last year was simply overwhelming,” said Shawn Wingard, a special education teacher at the school who is helping to organize the event. “It was truly inspiring to see people rally to help those in need during what is traditionally one of the food bank’s leanest times for donations. We are hoping to be able to donate 10,000 pounds of food this year.”
The donations come at a critical time for the Food Bank. There are several drives, including the Harvest for the Hungry Kids Helping Kids effort in which Anne Arundel County Public Schools participates, held in the weeks leading up to the holidays, but donations drop off dramatically in the weeks after January 1.
Donations can be dropped off in the office of the school, located at 415 Andover Road in Linthicum, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. from January 9 to 13. From 3 to 10 p.m., donations can be left with staff members camping out near the storage container.
