How Do Bay Plates Help The Chesapeake Bay?

Did you know Maryland license plates actually help the Bay?

I know it seems crazy, but a simple $20 fee goes a long way to restore and protect the Chesapeake Bay.  And here is a hokey video to prove it.

In today’s busy world, I know I don’t have a lot of time to devote to causes I care about. I’d love to volunteer more, but there simply aren’t enough hours in the day.  So instead, I often resort to other ways to show my support—sharing messages on Facebook, making donations—whatever I can do quickly and easily.  And as a lifelong Annapolitan, helping the Chesapeake Bay is important to me.  So how can I show my support for the Bay without a big cost or a lot of work? It’s as simple as a license plate.

On the back of everyone’s car, you have the option to decide what type of license plate you’d like to have.  (I know you think about this often right? Well that is why we’re here to explain it to you!)  For $20, the MVA (or your car dealer) will provide you with a Treasure the Chesapeake license plate that not only looks pretty great but also is donated to the Chesapeake Bay Trust, a nonprofit organization that works to improve the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland. Last year more than 50,000 Marylanders bought a plate, and as a result, the Trust awarded $5 million in grants that is making a difference.  (You also don’t have to wait to buy a plate when you get a car—you can do it anytime online at bayplate.org.)  So check it out when you have a second, and find out how little it takes to do a great thing for the Chesapeake Bay.

What will just a couple of license plates accomplish?

  • 2 license plates will plant 4 native trees to improve air and water quality
  • 3 license plates will fund a life-changing, outdoor experience for 5 students
  • 4 license plates will buy 150 wetland plants that prevent erosion
  • 5 license plates will remove 500 pounds of trash from streams and rivers
