Applications To AACPS Magnet Programs Exceed 2,100

| December 14, 2011, 02:30 PM | 0 Comments

More than 2,100 applications to Anne Arundel County Public Schools magnet programs were received this year, a 17 percent increase from a year ago. The tremendous response means that lotteries will be conducted for at least some of the seats in the following programs:

● BioMedical Allied Health magnet program at Glen Burnie High School

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programmes at Annapolis Middle School, MacArthur Middle School, and Old Mill Middle North

● International Baccalaureate Middle Years/Diploma Programmes at Annapolis, Meade, and Old Mill high schools

● Performing and Visual Arts middle school magnet program at Bates and Brooklyn Park middle schools

● Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math magnet program at North County and South River high schools

● Performing Visual Arts high school magnet program at Annapolis and Broadneck high schools

Because seats in the PVA magnets are determined in part by auditions and areas of concentration, some of those seats may not go to lottery. More than 1,600 unique applications for AACPS magnet programs were submitted by the December 2, 2011, deadline, the most ever.

“This response is a great testament to the success and value of these programs, but more importantly to the impact they are having on the lives of our children,” Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said. “These programs not only offer courses of rigor and relevance, but are created and sustained through the work of collaborative business and community partners who have a vested interest in successful outcomes for our children.”

The lotteries, conducted by an outside agency, will occur in mid-January. Families will begin to receive magnet program seat offers and waiting list placements by late January. More than 9,600 students from grades 6 through 12 are currently enrolled in an AACPS magnet program.
