Anne Arundel Schools Win $35K Grant For Arabic Language Program

Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ Office of World and Classical Languages has been awarded $35,000 in federal Race to the Top (RTTT) funds to run an afterschool Arabic language program at two county elementary schools.

The program is under way at Van Bokkelen and Brock Bridge elementary schools, and is open to students in fifth grade. It will run through May, and will focus on helping students learn about the language and cultural aspects of the Arabic community and the makeup of typical Arabic families. “This is an exciting opportunity for our students to learn a little more about a language that continues to grow in importance across our world,’’ said Jennifer Hernandez, the school system’s Coordinator of World and Classical Languages. “As we seek to create more well-rounded students who can not only contribute but excel in an increasingly global society, we are fortunate to be able to have these funds to assist us in our efforts.”

Van Bokkelen and Brock Bridge elementaries feed into Meade Middle School, which has just begun an Arabic program. An Arabic language course is planned for Meade High School in the future.

AACPS will receive up to $10,000 for program planning and start-up costs and $25,000 to purchase technology to support the program.
