The Anne Arundel County Commission on Disability Issues encourages youth of all abilities and their families who are looking for a fun sports-oriented experience to check out Pages 26 and 27 of the Fall/Winter Program Guide from the county Department of Recreation and Parks.

Adaptive Winter Recreation programs are offered at Ruth P. Eason Special School, 648 Old Mill Road, Millersville. These include a 10-week Adaptive Basketball for ages 5 to 15 on Saturdays beginning Jan. 7, 2012, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. for $50. A 10-week Adaptive Floor Hockey for ages 5 to 15 is offered for $50 on Saturdays beginning Jan. 7, 2012, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Learn basic skills, sportsmanship and the rules of the game. Wheelchairs are welcome. Volunteers and parents are encouraged to assist. Background checks are required for all volunteers.

A Saturday Recreation program for 10 weeks will be offered for $160 for ages 8 to 21 starting Jan. 7, 2012, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the school. Children develop social skills through sports play, arts and crafts, and other special activities while parents have a few hours to themselves. Bring lunch.

The Department of Recreation and Parks also offers a Teen/Young Adult Social Club for Youth with Developmental Delays for ages 13 and up on Fridays. The next sessions are from Feb. 3, 2012, to May 18, 2012, at Ruth P. Eason School from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and at Central Special School, 140 Stepney Lane, Edgewater, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. The cost is $160. Youth with differing abilities get together with peers for dancing, games, parties and socialization. There is a 1 to 5 supervision ratio. Programs run when schools are in session, and the schedule is subject to school availability. The Adult program previously held at North County Recreation Center has combined with the Teens at Ruth P. Eason Special School.

Contact the Adaptive Office at Recreation and Parks at 410-222-7313 for additional information on the registration procedure, scholarship information, and second pay provider information.
