Ann Arundel County Public Schools

A volunteer that can work a minimum of 10-hours per week is needed to help with light office work in the Office of Equity Assurance and Human Relations in the Office of Superintendent in Annapolis. The duties entail, but are not limited to: Light filing, answering phones, greeting visitors and AACPS personnel when coming to the office, duplicating needed materials, and transporting and retrieving documents from other departments. Arundel House of Hope

Arundel House of Hope’s programs encompass a variety of services for individuals experiencing homelessness in Anne Arundel County. These include transitional housing through the Fouse Center, Permanent and Community Housing, Supportive Housing through the Safe Haven Program, the Resource and Day Center, and the Winter Relief rotating shelter program. General volunteer needs include administrative support, transportation to and from appointments, job counseling and life skills coaches, computer maintenance help, and persons to serve on the board of directors. Additional volunteer opportunities vary by location but include facilities maintenance and repair and grounds maintenance. Donations of food and clothing items, cleaning, office and kitchen supplies, paper products, toiletry items, landscaping tools, and more are also needed. Citizen Corps Council in Anne Arundel County and the City of Annapolis

The Citizens Corps Council includes community service organizations, faith based organizations and the private sector which engage in specific projects in working groups. The Council’s mission is to make the County and City safer, stronger and better prepared through service and volunteerism that focuses on all hazards, emergency preparedness, and public safety. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month and the public is invited. Holiday Homeless Drive -December 20-24, 2011

The non-profit organization, Giving Back, Linda’s Legacy (GBLL), is conducting its 26th annual Holiday Drive to help the homeless. Giving Back needs volunteers to collect and sort donations from 11AM-5PM December 20-23rd at the Annapolis Farmers Market on Riva Road (at Harry S. Truman Parkway) in Annapolis. We also need volunteers to distribute these items to shelters in Baltimore, Annapolis, and Washington DC on December 24th from 8AM-3PM or 3PM-11PM. Donations are needed of winter clothing for women, men, boys, girls, and babies. Also needed are personal hygiene items, (i.e., lotion, shampoo, toothpaste/brushes, deodorant etc. for women and men), baby products (i.e., formula, diapers, wipes etc.), food (i.e., bottled water, bag lunches) and new toys for children of all ages. Creating Communities

The nonprofit organization’s goal is to build life skills and self-esteem and foster connections across cultures. Volunteers are needed to provide tickets and funding to take youth to cultural events, support the Arts Mentorship Academy for Arts, interview WWII vets and Holocaust survivors in the county, and visit patients at Anne Arundel Medical Center with therapeutic art cart. In addition, volunteers are needed to do web research to identify organizations serving the elderly in Anne Arundel County.  Contact Rob Levit at 410-263-6265 or [email protected]. Jennifer Road Detention Center

Volunteers, 21+ years of age, who pass a background check are needed to work in the library, assist with Pre-GED classes and the education program, as tutors, and to facilitate self-help workshops on parenting, job readiness, financial issues, and more. Training is provided. The education/Pre-GED program is held on Wed. & Thurs evenings. Self-help workshop scheduling is flexible.  Contact Karen McDonald at 410-222-7093.

 

Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary

At the Sanctuary, children and adults collect water samples, clear trails, weigh turtles, guide visitors on nature walks, draw maps, lead canoe trips, make posters, seine for fish, host the Visitor Center on weekends, and more. §         2–2 pm, Sat., Dec. 10, 2011, Trail Monitors Potluck Meeting & Orientation: A workshop for existing Trail Monitors and new volunteers interested in learning about the program so as to adopt available trails of their own. Call 410-741-9330.

§         10 am–12:30 pm, Sat., Jan. 7, 2012, Water Chemistry Research Training: Volunteers are needed to assist with the water chemistry component of the Watershed Stream Study. Brush up on current water testing skills, or come learn about the study for the first time. Reservation is required. Call 410-741-9330.

§         10 am–12 Noon, Sat., Feb. 18, 2012, Great Backyard Bird Count Training: People of all ages are welcome to join in the annual Bird Count. Participants will learn about common backyard birds, and how the Sanctuary collects data, and take a stroll to observe wild birds. Call 410-741-9330.  

 

Friends of Kinder Farm Park

The Friends of Kinder Farm Park is a non-profit volunteer group of citizens working to enhance this county park in Millersville off of Jumpers Hole Rd.  Volunteers are needed to help with the interior renovation of a 1925 farmhouse in January 2012.  There will be a need for “hammer users” as well as people to haul debris to a dumpster. We also need some furniture moved upstairs. Gloves and masks will be provided. We plan to work on Sat. Jan. 7, and Sat. Jan. 21, 2012 from 9:00 AM– 1:00 PM, or later. Pet Rescue of Maryland

This non-profit, all volunteer organization serving the greater Baltimore area is dedicated to saving the lives of dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies and finding permanent homes for the animals. Volunteers, age 18 and up, are needed to care for animals at the Timonium Petco Adoption Center, for outreach in the community, fundraising, for emergency services such as animal transport and animal care. Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center

The Center exists to preserve and present the history of the Wiley H. Bates High School by designing and installing exhibits highlighting accomplishments of Bates alumni and faculty. There is an ongoing need for volunteers, age 14 and up, to conduct exhibit tours and learn to become docents at the Center. Volunteers will receive orientation training and must have the ability to speak clearly, a willingness to learn, and an interest in history as well as a general knowledge of the community.
