Key School Buys Annapolis Golf Club For Expansion

The Greater Annapolis Patch is reporting that The Key School has purchased the 70 acre Annapolis Golf Club located off of Carrollton Road in the Annapolis Roads and Carrollton Manor communities.

For years, Hillsmere Shores neighbors have bemoaned the traffic issues the school brings to the quiet neighborhood. The school is located on a peninsula and there is only one way in and one way out.

The school told Patch that they plan to use the property to expand their athletic and educational programs. Will this campus serve as a second campus for the private school–perhaps a lower or upper school? Will the acquisition of this property also bring along the traffic?

We spoke with a Carrollton Manor resident who did not wish to be identified, “The traffic is bad enough here as it is, I can’t imagine having to add a parade of cars twice a day. This is the first I am hearing of this and I certainly hope that the County requires them to at least install a traffic light at the intersection.”

Currently, there are traffic signals at Arundel on the Bay Road and Edgewood Road with an emergency firehouse signal between. The two intersections are approximately 1000′ apart which, according to traffic engineers will present a “challenge.”

While this is undoubtedly a good thing for The Key School, sale of this same property to St. Mary’s parish was blocked several years ago when the parish was looking to build athletic fields on the property.  In a 2005 letter to the Editor of The Capital, Annapolis Roads resident, Corinna Magee said, “Clearly, residents of Annapolis Roads consider athletic fields and the accompanying traffic and noise inappropriate additions to this residential community.”

In a November 2004 letter, resident Angus Phillips was a little more blunt:

You couldn’t pick a worse place: Forest Drive is one of the county’s most treacherous arteries, jammed with traffic mornings and evenings. Bad crashes occur regularly.

There’s one way in and out of the community – crossing two busy lanes. Can you see a couple hundred teenagers in hopped-up Jeeps making that trek five times a week for football, soccer, lacrosse and field hockey practices and games? It’s a formula for disaster.

The residents appreciate the golf club and the open spaces that come along with it along with the flora and fauna and are concerned that development will erode their community.
