Unveiling The Mystique Of The American Muslim Woman

| October 01, 2011, 11:08 AM | 0 Comments

The Anne Arundel County Commission for Women will host a special event, “Unveiling the Mystique of the American Muslim Woman,” on October 22 at Anne Arundel Community College’s Pascal Center.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., will feature presentations by several esteemed speakers from the U.S. Naval Academy, Georgetown
University, and the International Islamic University Malaysia.  The program will tackle various subjects from the perspective of women who have lived in America and the Middle East.

“The key to understanding is education and communication,” said Dr. Salwa Elgebaly, chair of the event. “This event is among the first of
its kind in our country, and we hope it will lead to more events highlighting misunderstood cultures and communities.”

The event is sponsored by County Executive John R. Leopold, the Commission for Women, Anne Arundel Community College, and Anne Arundel County Muslim Council. It features four speakers, including Imam Yahya Hendi, the Muslim chaplain at Georgetown University. Georgetown is the first American University hire a full-time Muslim chaplain.

Imam Hendi is also the Muslim Chaplain of the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda and a Public Policy Conflict Resolution Fellow at the Center for Dispute Resolution of the University of Maryland School of Law and the Maryland Judiciary’s Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office. Imam Hendi is also the founder and President of Clergy Beyond Borders, and founder and president of Imams for Universe, Dignity, Human Rights and Dialogue.

This event is free. Please register at www.aacountycw.org or call 443-949-7261 for more information.
