Summit School Receives Million Dollar Gift

The Summit School, recipient of a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award, announces a one million dollar gift to its Endowment Fund from an anonymous family. The donor met with Dr. Jane R. Snider, Founding Executive Director, and explained that the family hoped the gift would ensure the work of the school would continue to help children and families for years to come.

The Summit School, located outside of Annapolis, MD, serves bright children with dyslexia and other learning differences. Their unique program is known nationally and internationally, drawing families from afar to this highly specialized institution.

“Summit was selected because of the difference it makes in the lives of children in a day when some schools do not work,” said the donor to Dr. Snider.

Summit has been in the quiet phase of an Endowment Campaign and has raised more than three million dollars thus far. The campaign now begins its public phase, and is hopeful that this gift will inspire others to recognize the important work of the school. The Endowment Fund was primarily established to grow scholarships and make the school accessible to a wide range of need, to build faculty and staff salaries and benefits, and to restore and expand facilities and technology.

“To be given this generous gift during difficult economic times is a testament to how families believe in our program”, says Dr. Snider. “Their generosity makes a huge difference for our school.”

Since its inception 23 years ago, Summit has earned more than 18 awards and honors, including the National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence award. The school serves nine Maryland counties and the District of Columbia. The program includes grades 1-8; students graduate to other area independent and public schools. Eighty to ninety percent then matriculate to college. Summit students have graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Bucknell University, and The Citadel, to name a few. They select varied fields of study and many advance to masters and doctoral level degrees.
