Midshipman Action Group To Participate In Local Volunteer Projects

The midshipmen members of the Naval Academy’s Midshipmen Action Group (MAG) will participate in numerous local volunteer and community service programs throughout the fall and spring semester. Last academic year, they logged 20,000 hours participating in community service projects, and this year they will participate in 30 core projects.

MAG midshipmen will volunteer in the following community projects this semester:

  • Participating in the National Public Lands Day event with the USNA Department of Public Works for an environmental clean-up at Greenbury Point on Oct. 15.
  • Volunteering with Habitat for Humanity restoring houses on Clay Street in Annapolis on Nov. 12.
  • Collecting canned goods for the Harvest for the Hungry program, sponsored by Anne Arundel County Public Schools.  Midshipmen plan on a collecting more food than last year’s 3.2 tons by Thanksgiving week.
  • Volunteering on Sundays with Big Brothers Big Sisters and mentoring dozens of children in the Annapolis area.
  • Visiting the wounded warriors at the Bethesda Naval Hospital every holiday season.  Midshipmen deliver a holiday meal and mingle with the patients and their families.
  • Collecting books for Project B.I.G (Books for International Good Will).  Midshipmen collect and sort hundreds of thousands of books for individuals such as our servicemembers abroad, children in developing countries and abroad educators of the English language.
  • Contributing in the care, cleanliness and nurturing of local sheltered animals in the SPCA of Annapolis on designated weekends.

Established in 1992 as a community relations program organized and maintained by the Brigade of Midshipmen, MAG currently offers a variety of educational, environmental and social service volunteer projects.  Coordinated with community partners from the Annapolis, Baltimore and Washington D.C. areas, as well as regional and national partners, MAG averages over 20,000 hours of community service annually.  MAG prepares midshipmen for future service by encouraging peer leadership, teamwork, character development, morale, selflessness and goodwill towards others.
