Synopsis: On Friday, October 7th, 2011 at approximately 06:22 hours (6:22 AM) Vehicle #1 was traveling east on Bay Front Road (Maryland route 258) when it crossed over the center line as the roadway curved to the right. As Vehicle #1 approached from the opposing direction, the driver of Vehicle #2, who had been traveling westbound, started to brake and pull to the shoulder in an effort to avoid the impending collision. While Vehicle #2 was attempting to stop, Vehicle #1 continued to across the westbound lanes and onto the shoulder where it struck Vehicle #2 head-on.
As a result of the impact Vehicle #2 was driven backwards off the north side of the roadway, coming to rest in the grassy area. Vehicle #1 rotated nearly 180º in a counterclockwise direction, coming to rest in the westbound lane, facing in a westerly direction.
The driver of Vehicle #1 was pinned in the vehicle, sustained fatal injuries, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of Vehicle #2 sustained multiple injuries and was flown to Prince George’s Hospital Trauma Center for treatment.
There is evidence to indicate the driver of Vehicle #1 had been programming his GPS at the time of this collision and was traveling approximately 10 mph to 15 mph over the posted 50 mph speed limit.
There is no evidence to indicate that either drug or alcohol usage contributed to the cause of this collision.
