UPDATE: The Severna Park Patch also uncovered this recent article claiming that Gill has scammed many more schools than those in Anne Arundel. His son claims he is $300 million in debt and has served time in prison for money laundering and presenting bad checks.

The Severna Park Patch broke a story about a local firm, the Odyssey Group who took money from the PTAs of 13 County schools in exchange for providing a Baltimore Ravens player to address the problem of bullying.

While an initial letter from their attorney claims that the schools will be re-paid for the players who never showed, the Anne Arundel County Public Schools attorneys are looking into the matter. The company collected $13,000 and did not provide the players for the scheduled assemblies.

In an October 7, 2011 letter provided to Patch, Odyssey’s attorney offers a replacement speaker as well as a refund. Eye On Annapolis has tried to contact the Odyssey Group unsuccessfully and their website has been taken down; however, Eye On Annapolis has located a cached version of the site.

Background

According to the Severna Park Patch, the Odyssey Group is owned by Joseph Gill. The Better Business Bureau lists an address of 1423 Sharps Point Road in Annapolis for the business. This is a $2 million waterfront residence on Whitehall Creek which appears to be rented.

According to Maryland SDAT records, there have been two different Odyssey Groups registered to do business in Maryland. Both have forfeited their license and none have listed Joseph Gill on their paperwork. Odyssey Group, LLC is no longer a valid entity and the Joseph Gill’s name was not listed on any of the entries.

Other Issues

According to Anne Arundel County court records, Joseph Gill recently had judgements placed against him from EZ Cash Of Delaware (a payday loan business) for $780.

According to recent court activity, Gill appears to be in financial trouble. In Queen Anne’s County, a judgement for $3060 was recently entered against him. In Dorchester County, one was recently entered against him for $5098.

There are no Maryland court actions that we could find against Odyssey Group.
