Alzheimer’s Association

The Alzheimer’s Association is a nonprofit organization which seeks to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through advancement of research, to enhance care and support for individuals, their families and caregivers, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health. There is an immediate need for Community Outreach Volunteers, age 21 and up, to attend local health fairs, sporting events, social events, charity campaigns, and other public venues to provide information about Alzheimer’s disease, our services, and ways to give back. Training and materials are provided. Other volunteer opportunities include: office & clerical assistance including data entry and mailings, helpline specialist, and family support group facilitators. In addition, volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising events such as Memory Walks, Galas, and Charity Golf.   • ·      8:00 am -Noon, Sat., Oct. 15, 2011, Walk to End Alzheimer’s:Friendly, outgoing volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed for a variety of positions before, during and after the event being held at Severn School in Severna Park, MD. Help is needed to greet participants & guide parking, for set-up & take-down, to help with food, beverage, and T-shirt distribution, photograph the event, and more. Students/groups are welcome. Anne Arundel County Literacy Council

The Literacy Council is the local affiliate of Laubach Literacy Action, recently reorganized as ProLiteracy Worldwide. Literacy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers, in small groups, and ESL tutoring. There is an immediate need for volunteer tutors, and there are also two open positions on the Board of Directors.  Hours are flexible and most work can be done at home. Bay Community Support Services (Formerly United Cerebral Palsy of So. Maryland)

Bay Community Support Services provides services and opportunities to children and adults with disabilities in Anne Arundel, Calvert, and St. Mary’s counties. Volunteers are needed for a variety of positions including; placing and picking up donation canisters, special event assistance, office assistant, board of directors & committee members, companionship, assisting with recreational/crafts activities, handyman, gardening/yard work, and more. Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County (Annapolis/Central County)

The Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County is one of 14 such foundations in Maryland and one of over 720 across the United States. Its goal is to build a permanent source of charitable funds dedicated to addressing the needs of the Anne Arundel County community. Historic Annapolis Foundation

Volunteers are needed in the areas of museum tours and education, horticulture in the William Paca House gardens, public programs and special events, membership services, and marketing.  Contact Volunteer Coordinator, Marcos Salaverria, at marcos.salaverria@annapolis.org or 410-267-6312.   • ·         4:30–9:15 pm, Fri. & Sat., Nov. 4 & 5, 2011, 20th Annual Annapolis by Candlelight Tour: Private home owners will open their beautiful homes from the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries in the Murray Hill area of Annapolis for the public to view. Volunteers, age 16 and up, are needed and will be placed in different rooms in different homes informing visitors about the history of the home and the objects inside, helping to direct the flow of visitors through the home. Each home is staffed by an HAF volunteer known as a House Captain who will provide information about the home to volunteers upon their arrival for their shift. Volunteers are asked to work a single shift on either Fri., Nov. 4th or Sat., Nov. 5th. To ensure all houses are staffed and ready to open promptly and to guarantee that shift changes occur smoothly, shifts will be from 4:30p.m.–7:15p.m. and from 6:45p.m. –9:15p.m. Contact Marcos Salaverria at 410-267-6312 or marcos.salaverria@annapolis.org to obtain application forms which should be filled out and returned by October 1, 2011. Junior League of Annapolis

This organization reaches out to women of all races, religions, and national origins who share an interest in and commitment to volunteerism and community service. Volunteers needed to work on projects supporting children and families, including the Teen Empowerment and Mentoring Program (TEAM) in conjunction with the Anne Arundel Medical Center’s Women’s and Children’s Division, the September Back to School Book Bag project, to assist with fundraising, serve on Board of Directors and support other programs and services.   • ·         8:30 AM, Sat., October 15, 2011, Volunteers on the Run 5K: Participants and volunteers are being sought by the Junior League of Annapolis for its fifth annual fundraising event at the Red Maple Pavilion at Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. The event is sponsored by Mairead M. O’Reilly, DDS, MS Orthodontics. Online registration for Volunteers on the Run 5K is available at www.active.com.  Proceeds from the event support Junior League of Annapolis, Inc.’s programs for Anne Arundel County women and children.

 

Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, Sat. Sept. 24, 2011

Volunteer opportunities are available now and on the event date for the 24th Annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival. The 24tht annual Kunta Kinte Heritage Festival, coordinated by Kunta Kinte Celebrations, Inc., raises an awareness of the African-American heritage and the common challenges encountered by all ethnic groups striving to preserve their culture.  The festival will be held at the Annapolis City Dock, Sat., Sept. 24, 2011 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Volunteer opportunities are available in the following areas: set up, refreshments, clean up, and more.  For more information contact KuntaKinteCelebrations@gmail.com, call 443-623-2856 or visit www.kuntakinte.org.

 

Quilts for Kids, Annapolis Chapter

The national organization’s mission is to keep expensive fabric out of our landfills and bring happiness to children through the simple gift of a handmade quilt. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed for an ongoing project to serve children in hospitals in Annapolis and surrounding communities. Basic sewing skills are necessary but instruction will be provided for quilting. Volunteers must have a sewing machine and transportation. Quilting workshops are held monthly on the second Saturday of the month from 8 am–12 noon at the Bay Area Community Church upstairs in room 223. Everyone is welcome! Walk for Peace in Our Communities, Sat., October 1, 2011

Please join the District Court of Maryland Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Office and the Maryland Mediation and Conflict Resolution Office (MACRO) for a 3k walk around the Inner Harbor of Baltimore to promote the use of conflict resolution processes in our communities and to kick off International Conflict Resolution Month. The event will be from 9 a.m.–12 Noon, Sat., Oct. 1, 2011, and will be at Rash Field, Baltimore Inner Harbor, adjacent to the Maryland Science Center. This is a free family event and in addition to the walk, there will be music, face-painting, snacks, and a scavenger hunt plus lots of opportunities to learn about Maryland organizations that offer mediation, community conferencing, and other conflict resolution processes.
