On Saturday, November 5, 2011, The Summit School will present the Zelma Wynn Symposium Series, Working Memory & Executive Function: Straight Talk, Sensible Solutions on campus from 8:00am-3:30pm. This annual, day-long event will feature guest speakers, Dr. William R. Stixrud, a clinical neuro-psychologist who has been extensively involved in the training and supervision of psychologists and learning specialists; and Dr. Honi J. Bamberger, a Professor of Mathematics at Towson University who has been a consultant for The Summit School for the last 12 years.
Parents, educators, and specialists will learn strategies to better educate learners who are challenged with issues related to memory and executive functions. Participants will learn:
- the different stages of memory and how memory impacts learning
- the two brain systems that play important roles in learning and memory
- instructional techniques that are helpful to students with poor automatic memory, working memory deficits, weak memory for spoken language, & how all of this impacts their acquisition of skills in school
- strategies to teach math understanding
- how language complexities confuse learners
- how to teach students the language of math problem-solving
Registration fees are as follows: $45 for parents and $70 for educators (includes a boxed lunch). Registrants may subtract $10 for early bird pricing if sent by October 21, 2011.
