The Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County Will Commemorate 10th Anniversary Of Sept. 11 Attacks Through Service

The Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks through service and volunteerism, marking the tragic events by rekindling the spirit of hope and community that followed the devastating day.

In 2009, the United States Congress passed bipartisan legislation formally recognizing  Sept. 11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance. As we mark the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, we have the opportunity to create a positive legacy through the powerful force of service.

On Sunday, Sept. 11th, the Volunteer Center is joining partners, including Maryland Dept. of Veterans Affairs, Ocean Conservancy, Anne Arundel Recreation & Parks, Friends of Anne Arundel Trails, the Midshipmen Action Group, Spa Creek Conservancy and the Youth Volunteer Corps, in planning to commemorate Sept. 11 with environmental projects starting at the W.W. II Memorial and continuing to Jonas Green Park.

In addition to weeding, planting and controlling stormwater runoff, we will partner with Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) as volunteers record items of debris they find, giving us a clear picture of the types of items impacting the health of the Chesapeake Bay.

Volunteers will sign-in at 8am at the Maryland World War II Memorial, in the median at 1920 Ritchie Highway (Rt. 450), Annapolis, MD 21401. Following the 8:30 ceremony, projects will continue until noon at Jonas Green Park, 1990 Ritchie Highway, Annapolis, MD 21401

Pre-registration is required.  Please contact Sarah Litts at [email protected]volunteerannearundel.org.  or 410-897-9207. Opportunities for community service credits are available.  Students under the age of 18 must have written parental permission.  Those under 16 must not only have written parental permission, but an adult on site as well. Wear sturdy shoes or boots (no flip flops or jellies), bring a hat, gardening equipment (if you have tools), sunscreen, sunglasses and gloves.  Water will be provided.  Parking is strongly recommended at the WWII Memorial on RT 450.
