Severna Park High Named County’s 11th National Blue Ribbon School

| September 21, 2011, 11:11 AM | 0 Comments

Severna Park High School today was named a National Blue Ribbon School by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, becoming the 11th county school and second county high school to receive the prestigious honor.

Severna Park is the third county school in the last four years to receive the distinction. The 1,889-student school is one of 10 Maryland public and private schools and 304 schools nationwide to receive the honor.

“This award is one not just for our students and our staff, but for our entire community,” Severna Park Principal Patrick Bathras said. “The success we have here is a true team effort and the result of many, many hours of work on the part of thousands of dedicated and caring students, parents, staff members, and community and business partners. I am simply privileged to be a part of such a wonderful effort.”

National Blue Ribbon Schools are awarded based on one of two criteria: the ability of schools with at least 40 percent of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds to dramatically improve student performance to high levels on state tests; or schools whose students, regardless of background, rank among their state’s highest performing schools on state assessments.

“The work that is being done at Severna Park goes far beyond test scores and state standards,” schools Superintendent Kevin Maxwell said. “This is a community that truly comes together to support and advocate for itsbstudents in every way imaginable, and this award is the result of every ounce of that support and advocacy.”

In addition to Severna Park, Benfield, Bodkin, Broadneck, Folger McKinsey, Jones, Mayo, Oak Hill, and West Annapolis elementary schools, Severna Park Middle School, and Southern High School have earned National Blue Ribbon distinction.

Severna Park High School will be honored by Secretary Duncan at an awards conference in Washington, D.C., on November 14 and 15.
