Police Investigating Suspicious Subjects

Anne Arundel County Police are investigating two separate incidents which occurred yesterday involving young children. In Riva, a man approached a 11-year old girl and offered a ride home. In Annapolis, an Hispanic man was reported to be hiding in the bushes and observing children at a bus stop, a 13-year old reported the incident. The children involved  were unharmed, but parents are cautioned to be extra vigilant and to discuss safety with their children. The information from the Anne Arundel County Police Department follows:

SUSPICIOUS SUBJECT                                                                                                       RIVA

On September 13, 2011, at approximately 8:00 p.m., officers from the Southern District responded to an address on S. River Terrace in Edgewater for a suspicious subject observed earlier.

Upon arrival, officers spoke to an adult male, who advised that his 11-year-old daughter had gotten off a bus at a bus stop located at Riva Road and Centre Road at approximately 3:20 p.m. when she turned around and noticed a white minivan with windows stopped behind her. The driver, described as a white male in his 50’s with a mustache and hair down to his ears, asked the child if she wanted a ride home. The child became scared and took off running and did not see the subject or vehicle again. The incident remains under investigation by Southern District detectives. Officers have increased their presence in the area.

 

SUSPICIOUS SUBJECT                                                                                          ANNAPOLIS

On September 13, 2011, at approximately 4:50 p.m., officers from the Southern District responded to an address on Quiet Waters Place in Annapolis for a report of a suspicious subject observed earlier.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with an adult male, who indicated that his 13-year-old daughter observed a suspicious subject hanging around her bus stop located at Hillsmere Drive and Quiet Waters Park at approximately 6:30 a.m. She reported that the subject, described as a Hispanic male, was hiding in the bushes and appeared to be watching students waiting for the bus. The subject never approached or spoke to children at any point. The 13-year-old female believes that she may have seen the subject in the area before. This incident is also being investigated by Southern District detectives. There has been no connection determined between either of the incidents. Officers have also increased their presence around the area that this incident was reported. Anyone with information on either incident is asked to contact the Southern District at 410-222-1960.

Safety Tips: Parents should have an action plan in place with their children in the event that a child is approached by a stranger. Remind your children to walk in groups and report suspicious activity to a trusted adult.
