Baysox Beat Erie, Keep Playoff Hopes Alive

The Baysox offense exploded for 10 runs to break a two game losing streak and keep their playoff hopes alive with a 10-2 win over Erie Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Baysox improve to 74-66 on the season and must await the result of the Richmond game Sunday afternoon to learn their playoff fate.

Left-handed pitcher Mike Ballard provided another dominant outing by a Baysox starting pitcher as he threw seven scoreless innings and allowed just three hits while striking out six batters in the win. Saturday night, right-handed pitcher Eddie Gamboa pitched seven innings and allowed just two unearned runs as the Baysox pitching staff has battled to boost a struggling Baysox offense.

The Baysox offense did not struggle Sunday as they managed 17 hits and tied the mark for biggest win of the season as they topped Erie by eight runs. Shortstop Pedro Florimon knocked in four RBIs and was joined by third baseman LJ Hoes with a team-leading three hits.

The Baysox jumped out in front in the bottom of the third inning against Erie starter Trevor Feeney. With one out, right fielder Ronnie Welty doubled to center field and scored on a two out triple to center field by Florimon to make the score 1-0.

In the fourth inning, the Baysox tacked on another run.  With one out, first baseman Joe Mahoney and catcher Caleb Joseph hit back-to-back singles to put runners at the corners. Second baseman Buck Britton knocked in Mahoney with an RBI single through the hole at second base to make the score 2-0

The Baysox added two more runs in the fifth inning.  Center fielder Xavier Avery led off the inning with a single to center field and advanced to third on a stolen base and a wild pitch.  Florimon then picked up his second RBI of the game on a single to left field that scored Avery. After walking first baseman Chris Davis, Erie reliever Rob Waite replaced Feeney on the mound. Left fielder LJ Hoes singled to load the bases before Mahoney knocked in the second run on a sacrifice fly to center field that increased the lead to 4-0.

In the seventh inning, the Baysox scored two more runs.  With two runners in scoring position after a walk by Florimon and a double to left field by Davis, Hoes ripped an RBI single to right field that scored Florimon.  Mahoney then followed with an RBI double over the head of SeaWolves left fielder Shawn Roof that knocked in Davis and made the score 6-0.

The SeaWolves got on the board in the top of the eighth inning against right-handed reliever Pat Egan. Michael Rockett hit a lead off single to right-center field and after Roof was hit by a pitch, Jamie Johnson grounded into a fielder’s choice that moved Rockett to third where he scored on a single to right field by Brandon Douglas that made the score 6-1.

The Baysox added on four more runs in the bottom of the eighth inning against Erie reliever LJ Gagnier. Welty led off the inning with a home run to center field.  After Avery reached on a single to first base, Florimon hit the Baysox second home run of the inning to right field.  With runners at second and third and still no one out after a walk by Davis and a double to right field by hoes, Mahoney capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly that made the score 10-1.

In the top of the ninth inning against right-handed reliever Raul Rivero, the SeaWolves salvaged one more run with a two out solo home run to left field by John Murrian.

Egan pitched the eighth inning in relief of Ballard and allowed one run on two hits while striking out one batter. Rivero pitched the ninth inning and also allowed one run on one hit to finish the game for the Baysox.

The 10 runs scored by the Baysox were the first time they hit double-digits since scoring 12 runs in a July 31 win against New Britain. The 17 hits recorded by the offense was the first time they were in double-digits since August 26.

The Baysox also managed eight extra-base hits in the game and went 6-for-19 with runners in scoring position after struggling in those situations for the past two weeks. In the past six games, the Baysox had managed just eight hits with runners in scoring position in 45 chances.

Monday, RHP Tim Bascom (8-4, 3.21) takes the mound for the Baysox as they finish the regular season with a game against the Erie SeaWolves. His opponent will be LHP Jay Voss (9-6, 3.67).
