Waring Sets Record, Baysox Win

The Baysox scored four unanswered runs to come from behind and beat the Erie SeaWolves 4-1 Sunday afternoon to avoid the sweep. With the win, the Baysox improve to 72-61 on the season and remain in second place in the division.

With the Baysox reeling after losing three games in a row, right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark took the mound Sunday in Erie. For Clark, who leads the team in starts (22) and innings pitched (134.2), it was one of his most important starts of the season. Clark came through for the Baysox as he pitched eight innings of one run ball and allowed three hits while striking out four in his team-leading 10th win of the season.

The SeaWolves jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning against right-handed starting pitcher Zach Clark. Jamie Johnson drew a lead off walk and went to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Shawn Roof. Brandon Douglas then singled to right field to put Erie up 1-0.

The Baysox tied the game in the top of the eighth inning when third baseman Brandon Waring hit a lead off home run to left field off Erie reliever Rob Waite.

Bowie took their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth inning. Center fielder Xavier Avery drew a one out walk and went to third base when second baseman Buck Britton singled to right field. Left fielder L.J. Hoes gave the Baysox the lead when he plated Avery with a single to right field. Two more runs came around to score when Waring doubled to right field to give the Baysox a 4-1 lead.

Right-handed closer Jose Diaz finished off the game for the Baysox with a perfect ninth inning to record his 21st save of the season.

The home run was Waring’s team-leading 20th of the season and 43rd in his Baysox career. With the home run, Waring set a new Baysox franchise record for career home runs, breaking the record held by Keith Reed. Waring paced the Baysox offense Sunday with two hits and a team-leading three RBIs.

The Baysox started slowly Sunday afternoon, recording just two hits and no runs in the first seven innings. The team then came alive late in the game with four runs on four hits to steal the win similar to the way the SeaWolves snatched come from behind victories in the first two games of the series. It was the fourth time this season the Baysox have won when trailing after the seventh inning.

Erie starter Brooks Brown pitched seven shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out six, but he did not factor into the decision as the SeaWolves lost the lead late in the game.

The Baysox return home Monday, Aug. 28 for an eight game home stand to finish out the season. Promotions during the home stand include a Brian Matusz bobblehead giveaway Thursday, Sep. 1 and Fan Appreciation Day Sunday, Sep. 4.
